"You're trying to go up and you're just going down," said protester Shantel Walker, 31, of Brooklyn who makes $7.25 working at a Papa John's in Manhattan. "All of us are in the same financial crunch. We're trying to take care of our families and our livelihood."
The strikes mark the latest salvo in a nearly year-long battle to get not only higher wages but also an opportunity to unionize without facing retaliation from employers.

U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez told The Associated Press the strikes were a sign of the need to raise the minimum wage. "For all too many people working minimum wage jobs, the rungs on the ladder of opportunity are feeling further and further apart," Perez said.
Workers are demanding that the $200 billion fast-food industry more than double starting salaries to $15 an hour from the current $7.25 an hour minimum wage and the $8.94 median wage for front-end workers.

And then they will charge tips because the well paid service is respectable.
The assumptions behind such an argument are that the “race” which you are referring to is somehow incapable of controlling their rooting urges.
And yes, this is what the left assumes about blacks.
All of the pictures on the various FR posts on this topic should turn everyone to eating at home. Since I believe God has lifted His protection on this nation who knows what bacteria and diseases lurk behind the counter. I will never forget seeing one fast food worker putting chocolate chip cookies on the sheet for baking and licking his fingers in between placement of the dough. Needless to say I informed management and of course forgot the cookies.
I might go to McD's more often for breakfast but plopping down more greens for less food and 3rd world workers is not so appealing. At home I can jazz up the eggs the way I like them and for less dineros too. We consumers can strike back too as those dimwits don't seem to comprehend basic economics.
Welcome to Obamaville sucker! You voted for him.
I guess they’re not lovin’ it...........
For the multiple past decades of McD’s and other fast food venues why is it only now that we have this talk of a ‘living wage’ here in 2013? Just proves that the economy is crapola and many workers who would even consider such entry level jobs as a career. Frankly I’m tired of paying $$ for dwarf hamburgers to support demanding workers who give crappy service. Sayonara....
I passed by 4 McD’s, no protest either. It’s too damn hot to be out protesting right now in L.A. at 90 degree weather.
It is hot. But I was there at 5:30 AM.
Quotes from THE BURBS:
Art Wiengartner: Well, there used to be a big drugstore on the corner there, had a big soda fountain, remember?
Ray Peterson: Yeah.
Art Wiengartner: Yeah, and the guy who ran it was a - was a rotund guy, had glasses. His name was Skip. Lived over on Elm, had a wife, a couple of kids, ya know? Not too sharp, I mean, hey the guy's 40 years old, he's wearing a paper hat and he's makin' cherry Cokes, it's a cinch he's not runnin' for governor, right?
Who is John Galt?
We have a friend who calls it McNasty. She dropped a patty on the floor, getting ready to throw it in the trash and was told to use it anyway. Last burger I ever ate at Mickey Ds.
Not the exact line, but I think pretty close. The song is “The Last In Line” (not sure if “The” belongs). Title track from his 2nd CD. You probably know this already.
BTW, did you know that Dio is listed in the credits of “Atlas Shrugged”...must have donated to the production. Sadly he died before Part II was filmed.
When their protest signs say, “Si, Se Puede!”, I say go back to Mexico.
And they don't care if the cost of the finished product and unemployment go up. And the unemployed will be competing for other low wage jobs, driving those wages even lower.
I strongly doubt that a Manhattan Papa John’s can get even trainee level employees for $7.25 with no benefits (unless perhaps it’s located in a very cheap part of northernmost Manhattan?). Any New Yorkers have an opinion?
Agree! (With a slight addition to your statement ;)
You know, I remember in the mid late 80's companies actively recruited young adults out of college with 100K/yr starting salaries....but Reagan sucked.
