A landmark new law passed by Saudi Arabia on Monday makes domestic abuse a crime in the country for the first time, with perpetrators facing up to a year in prison. Until now, violence in the home has been treated as a purely private matter.
The law, passed by the countrys Council of Ministers, prohibits various kinds of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, both at home and in the workplace.
Abusers will face a minimum jail term of one month, rising to a maximum of one year, or be fined between 5,000 and 50,000 riyals.

But, but, but Shariah Law not only allows abuse it encourages it. Allah will not be pleased.
And which of those downtrodden, bruised, scarred, faceless burqa-wearing housewives is going to file charges?
Let the beheadings begin!
Kinda hard for a DV victim to come forward after she and her head are no longer together, isn’t it?
We don't need any stinkin' laws to legislate civilized behavior, decency!
How's that you mongrel Wahhabi bastards??
Let’s see this be enforced! The Saudis did this just as window dressing to appease the West.
Riiiight.
That’ll work like gun control in Chicago.
Saudi Arabia is only about 100 years behind the US.
Slavery was legal until 1962, about 100 years after the US.
The prohibition of wife beating is about a century after the US as well.
How many witnesses are required?
They’re catching up. Only a couple of centuries behind now.
This is a nice improvement.
Our President will comment on this at his next press conference?
Good question! Under Sharia, a woman's testimony doesn't match up to a man's.
"Beat your wife and we kill her. End of abuse."
After which time the woman will be stoned to death, which sentence the judge may mercifully commute to beheading.
Well, it worked in the US. Why not Saudi Arabia?
oh the sharia will smack this down so hard.
Sharia legalizes domestic abuse. Somebody here went huge bipolar.
