Former Amb.: 'Every Chance We'll Lose Aircraft' If U.S. Sends Planes Over Syria
CNSnews.com ^ | 8/28/13 | Eric Scheiner

(CNSNews.com) - Ryan Crocker, who was a career diplomat with long experience in the Middle East, and who served as the U.S. ambassador to Syria from 1998 to 2001, says “there’s every chance we’ll lose aircraft” if U.S. planes enter Syrian airspace.

During an August 23 National Public Radio (NPR) interview Crocker was asked about possible U.S. military action against Syria.

“I was in Lebanon when the Israelis invaded in June of 1982, and the entire Syrian air force was basically just destroyed in a matter of hours because of inadequate air defenses,” said Crocker.

“The Syrians learned from that and have spent decades with their Russian allies developing a highly advanced, well-integrated air defense system,” Crocker continued. “That's what makes a no-fly zone so much more dangerous in Syria than in, say, Iraq or Libya. There's every chance we would lose aircraft.”

Will we make a full effort to take out Syria's AA system, or are there too many Russians manning it so they will be declared a "safe zone"?

Does Syria have any weapons that can take out a ship?

The real question is will Syria be relying on Syrian operators to man those RADARs?

One can possess top notch state of the art systems but they'll be largely useless if the operators are incompetent. Even with trained operators an effective SEAD package and good tactics can render a state of the art system moot.

All I know is the lost a NK made nuke facility and a bunch of Russian supplied hardware to Israeli air strikes. They even did a fly by over Assad’s palace to say hello.

Look at this from Obama’s perspective:

If he wants to help the rebels win, he must take out Assad.

but he does not have the authority to take out Assad.

A bunch of US jets or ships destroyed would give Obama the justification to take out Assad.

As many have pointed out, Obama loathes the military (using a Clinton term). So, why should he care about a few losses for the greater good?

An unarmed RF-4E and the Turks backed off the original claim that the Syrians had shot it down.

What’s Cindy Sheehans opinion about all of this? I’ve been scanning all of the MSM news channels, but can’t find hide nor hair of her.

Yes. The Chinese - out good friends and trading buddies to whom we absolutely must continue sending our manufacturing capability and jobs - sold Iran and Syra some Silkworm missiles. They don't have as much range as current Chinese fare, but they Syrians aren't playing in the wide expanse of the Pacific and absolutely are capable of taking out a carrier.

Speaking of Nobel Prizes....I once was behind a white guy and his wife in one of them Mercedes SL convertibles, RED! You know the model number I mean...the ones that cost like a hundred K new....

Anyway, these two were stopped at a light. She had her tennis outfit and sun visor on as did he. They were loving it....loving it...experiencing the Mercedes of it all.

I was behind them in my truck higher up and could see them well. Very soon thereafter across the intersection pulled up ANOTHER RED MERCEDES SL expensive and stopped at the light.

It really wasn’t a long light, but what happened next was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. In this other SL were a couple of black chicks, svelte, groovy and getting down! Music loud as hell, hair as orange and red as you could get and they were boogeying down!...slapping hands, gesticulating and party-down!

I saw immediately - sun visor gal didn’t - neither did hubby. They were basking in the unobtainable, enviable aloofness that was that expensive Red Mercedes SL convertible. The sacrifice they’d made to buy it was surely worth it.

Then, she turned her head and SAW! Saw the two chicks...saw all of it. At that moment, I braced myself, prepared for what was to come. After spying the two chicks, her head turned immediately left with a look that could freeze the ocean. “You stupid m’effer!” it blared. The look of disgust in presence of the now terminal driver complete.

Meanwhile, me behind them was laughing so hard, I stalled my truck....funny, funny,.....I didn’t even care about the honks behind me....

So. Why all this in response to a button about the Nobel Prize? I dunno. Could be that one man’s prize is another man’s trinket.

I’m thinking there’s a chance we loose a missile cruiser or other surface ship if this little episode develops. The rumor is the Israeli’s were surprised the last time they bombed in Syria and loss a sub + 1 F-16 or 18.

Well numb nuts, fortunately for us, you’re a desk jockey and not a General.

We’re quite capable of engaging Syria, without pilots ever being “over” Syria.
