(CNSNews.com) - Ryan Crocker, who was a career diplomat with long experience in the Middle East, and who served as the U.S. ambassador to Syria from 1998 to 2001, says theres every chance well lose aircraft if U.S. planes enter Syrian airspace.
During an August 23 National Public Radio (NPR) interview Crocker was asked about possible U.S. military action against Syria.
I was in Lebanon when the Israelis invaded in June of 1982, and the entire Syrian air force was basically just destroyed in a matter of hours because of inadequate air defenses, said Crocker.
The Syrians learned from that and have spent decades with their Russian allies developing a highly advanced, well-integrated air defense system, Crocker continued. That's what makes a no-fly zone so much more dangerous in Syria than in, say, Iraq or Libya. There's every chance we would lose aircraft.

Barry is just gonna lob some old cruise missiles and go snuggle with reggie. No worries.
And Reg will tell him what a big man he is.
We will lose some if Syria was able to get any of the S-300 PMU systems in from Russia they contracted for. My guess is our forces won’t be flying anywhere near Damascus.
The Israelis, who arguably have some of the most advanced aircraft protection systems, have not risked an aircraft over Syria since their bombing raid on Assad’s first nuclear reactor. The Russians have installed their most advanced anti-aircraft systems which they “guarantee” will take out low flying F-16’s. The Israelis are launching glide bombs from Lebanon. The bombs go at least 100 miles into Syria and hit with pinpoint accuracy. Will we be stupid enough to send our overworked and under supplied aircraft into Syrian airspace?
Hey, isn’t that a job for the ‘rebels’? After all, if we’re going to be Al Queda’s airforce, shouldn’t the ground troops do something?
That is a feature to the Øne. He is multi-faceted in his hatred for the military. So, if it means de-funding, if it means feminizing, if it means pulling out any notion of religion other than islam, if it means selling arms to muzzies, if it means giving arms/planes/tanks to muzzies, if it means clandestinely giving our enemies our arms, if it means unilaterally giving up nuke deterrents, surely given the chance to outright lose aircraft, with their pilots and crewmembers to boot, it's a no-brainer "GO!" for Ø.
Israel doesn’t.
Why are we incapable?
Despite the bravado often seen here at FR over US forces’ flying machismo and expertise, modern Russian SAM systems (acquisition, tracking & engagement) radars and their missile counterparts are deadly - deadly, and a US pilot would be a fool to think otherwise.
Syria isn’t going to be depending on a generation or two old systems like Iraq or in Iran; they’ll have something more up to date for both long-range and close-in support.
Have any current Democratic members of Congress spoken out against this act of war?
Come onnnn though, brother Obama has to help Al-Qaeda! He’s on a roll! Look how far they’ve come with the assistance of brother Obama peace be upon him...Egypt, Libya...Come on they even got to kill a US Ambassador! Brother Obama is Mohammed returned! Peace be up him! And he can get away with it because the RINOs have done nothing but hide since he took office.
What happens in Syria should make no difference to the USA.
This is a civil war and the American people dont need to spend lives and money only to be hated regardless of which group of 7th century sand monkeys win.
Tell them to give us a call when the fighting is finished and let us know who won (like it makes any difference).
The entire Middle East is filled with low grade sub-human clans who hate each other and have done so for centuries. A few missiles launched by the Prophet Obunghole will not solve this conflict.
The USA will be hated if we support monkey A or monkey B or no monkeys so lets just save our troops and money.
Agreed about deadly but also think day 1 Smokes .most of them and CAC. Operators remaining too busy with soiled knickers to concentrate on day 2 when the actual delivery arrives.
Turkey has already lost an aircraft.
Airplanes and possibly an aircraft carrier if Assad blows off a few of those silkworms he’s been buying from Russia. Barky, Lurch and Hagel have no clue of what they are getting us into.
Is he talking about the advanced air defense system the Israelis flew right through a few years ago?
Hmmmm.....no infrared signature.
