Rush Limbaugh's now-official move to WOR (710 AM) on Jan. 1 could be the first in a series of dominoes that reshape New York talk radio.
That will be especially true if Sean Hannity joins him and gives WOR the afternoon combo Rush from noon-3 p.m. and Hannity from 3-6 p.m. that propelled WABC to the top of city talk radio and has kept it there this whole century.
Widespread reports have Hannity wanting to get away from Cumulus, which owns WABC. Hannitys current syndication deal is through Premiere, which is a division of Clear Channel, which owns WOR. His Premiere deal expires at the end of the year, but it would be no stretch to see him reupping and joining 710. Clear Channel bought WOR a year ago and has been more or less marking time there, with ratings it no doubt wants to improve. While Limbaugh and Hannitys listenership has flattened out in the last few years, they still host the two most popular radio talk shows in the country.

With all the free advertisement Comrade Barry has been giving Rush expect another spike in listeners.
Even though I am in Asia, I can hear RUSH every day, thanks to my DAR.FM recording service. It is a really great service that records ANY and all radio programs that you ask it to do.
I am listening to Monday’s Rush as I type this. It is 8 AM, Tuesday here. Check it out at www.dar.fm
Rush on WOR? Yay!!!! I grew up listening to Bob and Ray and Jean Shepard and Bob Grant on that station so it’s all good. Seriously, I’m not a fan of Joan Hamburg so it’s even better.
I miss my mom getting us up and listening to John Gambling reading school closings. That was magical.
That would be great if Levin moves over too, keep the triumverate in place!
And they should bring back STEVE MALZBERG!
Now Cumulus is free to put Huck on WABC and show us how he can crush Rush ;-)
How Hannity gets anywhere near the top ratings is a mystery to me.
What’s going to happen to Joan Hamburg? For out-of-towners, she’s a 78-year old yenta who has been pushed all around the clock on WOR, most recently bumped to the noon spot against Rush. She mostly talks about restaurants, travel, stuff like that. Not too political. When Rush moves to WOR, he’ll take her spot. I kind of feel sorry for her. She’s been on WOR for about 40 years.
Bob Grant, the man who started it all.
Levine thinks he’s funny with the :”get off my phone!” shtick.
Bob was doing that back in the ‘70’s, when Levine wasn’t even an itch in his ol man’s pants.
(Well, maybe Levine is older than I think, but he was just a babe in the woods back then.)
WOR picked up Bob when ABC got weak shaky knees (and folded like a “cheap camera”) after Bob said something that was 100% true. Forget what it was, but WOR has always been eating ABC’s lunch. After the faggots at Disney bought the channel, it was only a matter of time till they cut Grant off at the knees.
“Pusillanimous Pipsqueaks,” all. Gavones and gagazoets. The “march of the gavones.”
Grant was ahead of his time.
It’s still a very interesting turn of events. WABC has been the king of talk radio in NYC for decades. At one time they had the top ratings in NYC in every show except for the 6-10 slot in the morning. Those were the days when they had former mayor Ed Koch on in the late mornings until noon, Rush Limbaugh from 12-3, Bob Grant from 3-7, Jay Diamond during the evenings, and Curtis Sliwa (and later a young Sean Hannity) on the overnights. That was an unbelievable talk radio lineup.
“hey, can I get Larry Glick on this thing?”
WOR was a great station back in the day. Talk radio as we know it was born there. Long John Nebel was the prototype for Art Bell. Shepherd wasn’t political, but he proved that you could be a success just talking for 45 minutes straight. They normally had 15 minutes of news each hour, instead of the 5 minute potty break we have now.
Have you seen the New York Message Board? I just took a peek, it’s very busy right now about this subject. There is a thread that Savage may fill one of the slots.
I don’t see anything about Joan Hamburg. Maybe she’s going to retire or go to a weekend slot.
I don’t know if I can post a link to the board but its the first one in google.
She hasn't paid for a meal in over 40 years.
Just a minute, lemme check (whistles)...yup, you can.
Yeah, loved Shep on WOR. Mom used to listen to Dorothy Killgalon (sp) she once said they had stopped making waffle ice cream cones, Mom sent her some I remember listening and sure enough she got the cones and nibbled on some, thanking my Mom. It was a big deal at the time for Mom!
People can also tune in to the many stations on the internet that carry his show. I’m in the habit of doing that now and avoiding static from my radios.
WABC is 50 kW station, WOR is down in the mud, low power, smaller range.
