It’s still a very interesting turn of events. WABC has been the king of talk radio in NYC for decades. At one time they had the top ratings in NYC in every show except for the 6-10 slot in the morning. Those were the days when they had former mayor Ed Koch on in the late mornings until noon, Rush Limbaugh from 12-3, Bob Grant from 3-7, Jay Diamond during the evenings, and Curtis Sliwa (and later a young Sean Hannity) on the overnights. That was an unbelievable talk radio lineup.

He didn't win his time slot (due to WOR's venerable "Rambling with Gambling"), but Dave Dawson was underappreciated, and maybe too subtle for NYC tastes.

Callers would try to bait him. One of my favorites was when some pro-abort called, and said "What if the doctor said your wife would die if she didn't get an abortion?", Dawson drily shot back "I'd get another doctor." More than once he would draw out the callers and more than once he got them so boiled that they called him a half-breed (Dawson was part Native American Indian). Then, he pointed out to the world what hypocrites they were.
