SAN JOSE -- Want a Coke at the San Jose Library? A root beer for the kids at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo? Maybe some whole milk for the little one? Forget it! That stuff makes you fat.

A San Jose councilman wants the city to stop providing sugary drinks and whole milk at city properties and events to promote healthier diets.

"We cannot stop the obesity epidemic," City Councilman Ash Kalra said in his proposal. "But as the city of San Jose, we can do our part by being socially responsible and accountable for the products we make available to San Jose residents at the facilities and centers we operate, as well as at events that we host."

Banning San Jose “councilmen” sounds like a better idea to me.

Therein lies my problem with ALL politicians. They always think they know better. It starts from the City Council on up to the presidency.

Everyone tells me I should work towards local politics. What good does it do when you have these types who have a need to control every aspect of your life? They have an obsession to control and make life better in twisted little socialist minds. What to do? Thinking it's time for tar and feathers. I'm so fed up with controlling politician wannabes.

Other than water, there’s not much of anything....safe to drink anymore. Well...except maybe beer.

can someone smarter than me explain how we can have an obesity epidemic while at the same time people like matt damon and ben afflect make public service announcements about kids in America starving?

If soda is outlawed, then only outlaws will have soda!

If they want to stop childhood obesity, they should shut down the school lunch program.

Its for the children!

Using that logic, we should ration everything we don't ban. Issue ration stamps for water, a little rice, a little fruit, some beans, a few bites of celery and grains. Ban everything else. Can't get fat on that.

These pigs aren't do-gooders. You can see right through them. They are the worst kind of tyrants there are.

Perhaps City Councilman Ash Kalra should worry more about his own problem: drinking. Having a DWI conviction gives Kalra zero credibility.

It is not the soda pop that is causing the obesity problem. It is the toxic culture that makes it unsafe for families to have fun outdoors.

When I was growing up we had baseball games in the summer and flag football after school. Of course, we loved to dig underground tunnels and build tree forts and a hundred other activities. When our moms called us for dinner we always gave our words of disappointment. Dinner meant we had to end our time having fun.

City Councilman Ash Kalra are the nanny government nitwits on steroids, sucking every kind of outlet for having fun out of the culture. They want all the families in their cages watching the boob tube and not “making trouble.” This is the formula for creating fat cows.

Another Big Government Nazi blaming soda pop for all of America’s ills.

Bet this jackboot thinks homosexuality is OK....even though that will kill you sooner than Coke or Pepsi will

There are times when I think these people have so little self control that they think everyone else has none either. And with that mindset they think that because they can’t do it on their own then nobody else can either.

And that’s how they justify putting government into the position of Nanny for everything they personally have problems with.

This guy Ash Kalra is one very bad egg -

Councilmember Kalra sits on San José’s Community and Economic Development Committee, and is also a liaison to San José’s Planning Commission, where he previously served for over 2 years prior to taking office. Ash serves as a member of the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Plan Liaison Group, the Association of Bay Area Governments Executive Board, the Santa Clara County Cities Association Legislative Action Committee, the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County Board, and is also currently serving on the Sister Cities International Board of Directors. In January of 2013, he was unanimously appointed as the chairperson of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Board. Councilmember Kalra was also appointed as the vice-chairperson of the Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board in January of 2013. Kalra also serves on the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers (CalTrain) Board as a representative of the VTA, and was recently named to the newly formed CalTrain Modernization Committee.

Councilmember Kalra earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a law degree from Georgetown University. Ash is a Professor at Lincoln Law School of San José, where he teaches “Race and the Law,” and he previously was an instructor at San Jose State University, where he taught “Law and the Black Community.”

For 11 years, Kalra worked as an attorney for the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office representing indigent clients in Drug Court prior to being elected. He is the first Indian-American to be elected to the San José City Council. In 2012, Kalra was honored to receive the San José Silicon Valley NAACP Legislator of the Year Award and the Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee (BAYMEC) Straight Ally Award.
