Tim Tebow's days with Patriots may be coming to end, gets no playing time vs. Lions

DETROIT – Tim Tebow spent most of this Thursday night – perhaps one of his fleeting few remaining as an NFL quarterback – standing near the 50-yard line of the New England Patriots sideline.

When the Pats were on defense, he'd sometimes casually flip a ball around by himself. When they were on offense, he'd put his helmet on, ready to go in – whether at QB or any other position the coaching staff might request.

"You just prepare yourself and be ready for whenever your number is called," Tebow said.

Tebow's number was never called.

I guess New England solved it's tight end problem so it doesn't look good for Tebow to be on the roster for the season opener.

Well, the way NE played last night they are going to need a helluva lot more than Tebow to get going.

Tebow has played as many snaps at TE in his career as I have.

Wasn't that the speculation when New England signed him? That he'd finally agreed to play a position other than QB since his skills in that area are lacking? I believe tight end was mentioned on several occasions. Well it looks like that experiment is over.

Sadly, in the first two games at QB for the Pats, Tebow was awful. His reads were slow and his passes were almost all inaccurate.

Last night I watched the first half. The Pats were terrible on offense, even with Brady at QB. I saw a few series in the second half with Mallet. He hasn’t been very good in the preseason (I didn’t check to see if he got it together later in last night’s game). If anything happens to Brady, Mallet will not be up to the job from what I’ve seen. I think they made a mistake releasing Brian Hoyer, who was much more effective than Mallet.

Five of nineteen? I'd say so. Looks like Tebow is going to have to move on with the rest of his life and put football behind him.

It appears that was more wishful thinking than anything Belichick was seriously considering.

Tebow is obviously athletic and might able to play a position like fullback or tight end. But the time to figure out if that is correct is before one is in the NFL, not after.

I think they’re reading too much into this. 3rd pre-season game is traditionally the “real practice” game, 1st squad has the 1st half, 2nd squad has the 2nd half, 3rd and lower squads make token appearances if any. 1st, 2nd and 4th games are for trying people out and seeing if there’s room for them.

Of course on the other hand Bill rarely carries 3 QBs, and Tebow is 5 of 19 when he’s played. So maybe he is doomed, or maybe not.

That was some people’s speculation, but it was silly because they had 5 TEs when they signed and it was never confirmed by anybody remotely attached to the team. Yeah now they’re down to 3 until Gronk comes back, but that’s still 3 which is a pretty typical number to have signed. If TE had anything to do with his signing it was his old favorite target in college TE Antonio Hernandez, who is now in jail indicted for 1st degree murder, so that reunion tour is canceled.

According to the story 87 of 90 healthy players saw some action last night. They all can't be first and second string.

“Some action” has a very wide definition. One snap, maybe a special teams appearance. Nothing is for sure until it happens.

I would think the coaching staff will consider whether the passes should've been caught, or could've been caught. They have to answer the questions, were the passes good? Were they high or low-percentage passes? Did he read the defense correctly, and throw to the correct receiver?

Define “should’ve” and “could’ve”, they weren’t. He was up against 3rd string defense and missed his targets, again, like he’s been doing his whole NFL career.

“hitting your targets”, as you call it, is not really Tebow’s style. Tebow has always been Tebow. I would say you are nitpicking .... Brady and Tebow simply have a different approach to the game. Get real.
