NEWINGTON When Andy Nowicki was a combat infantryman fighting the Germans in World War II, the army gave him free cigarettes.
Now, the habit he picked up 70 years ago, thanks in part to Uncle Sam, might cost him his home.
The Newington Housing Authority is suing to evict Nowicki, who will turn 90 next month, and his 90-year-old wife, Leona, from their senior housing apartment in Cedar Village.

He should be grandfathered.
look the old timer smoking is a fire hazard to teh oter old people
I am sorry he is having a hard time, buthe can’t smoke inside.
It is probably a health hazard to the old people with COPD
So, he needs to quit or smoke outside.
Nicorette gum
Exception on the basis that he is old and war veteran doesn’t counterbalance the risk of him setting something on fire since he is so old
The first cigarrete I ever smoked came out of a box of C-Rats.
I believe the term is called "constructive endorsement" or similar. It is a valid defense in many Homeowner's Association Covenant infractions. Say if chain link fences aren't allowed but several homeowners have them, or boats are allowed but the rule is ignored by some and tacitly allowed or overlooked.
However, this being a government-subsidized complex, I doubt they would prevail; the two government pukes running the place have no soul. About the only place you'll see "free cheese" is in a government handout line, or in a mousetrap.....same difference.
The article never said it was inside. It was under a breezeway outside. He was closer than 10 feet from a door or window.
An assumption based on what?
God Bless him.
He’s on a very low fixed income, and I don’t know how he can afford cigs, living in Connecticut. I think they are upwards of $8./pack.
yeah yeah I know
But as he ages he will have a nic fit and not be able to walk outside for a cig
Taking the long view
He was outside...he just wasn’t the required ten feet.....because he can barely WALK.....read the article next time......
There are a things worse than smoke Nazi’s....but not many...
Aw hell, the guy is already 90!, what do you mean “as he ages?”
Somebody get him a fake cigarette. (e-cigarette?) That way there is no fire hazard, and no secondhand smoke to offend anybody.
you are proving my point, he is getting less mobile and will smoke inside and fall asleep and set a couch on fire......
Ditto. But I’ll tell you one thing. I’ll live outside in a tent, under a tarp, or in the woods before I’d EVER live in some government home.
The anti smoking crowd is worse than the global warming crowd.
well, you gotta light the dumb things
how about the electronic cigs? will that work for him?
Nope, the first smoke Nazi that sees it will start coughing reflexively. It doesn’t matter if it’s just water vapor, they ‘see’ it.
I used to eat them all the time way back when....came with little packs of 4 cigarettes.
