Opposition says as many as 1,300 killed in gas attack near Damascus

(Reuters) - Syria's opposition accused President Bashar al-Assad's forces of gassing many hundreds of people - by one report as many as 1,300 - on Wednesday in what would, if confirmed, be the world's worst chemical weapons attack in decades.

We're not sure if the Syrian government did it.

We're not sure if the Syrian rebels did it.

If the rebels did it, we're not sure what faction did it.

We're not sure if one side did it and blamed it on the other.

We're not sure that it even happened at all.

And if it did, we're not sure what the heck it matters to the USA anyway.

1) Wire services are reporting this with no confirmation

2) No government forces in the area, only rebels

3) to kill that many people in such a wide area, a whole lot of chemicals must have been used.

4) A government to use chemicals around its own capital - with UN inspectors in the area? (the wind could have blown that right back at you

5) Syria was already re-taking towns and beating the rebels back. No need for Bad PR.

6) Need something to get Egypt off the Al Jazerra News Cycle

Conclusion: I don’t believe this was an attack by the Syria Government, nor do I believe the rebels could posses this much ordinance for such a wide area.

It is not uncommon for a dead person to have one or both eyes open. If I were to have to guess which, if any, of the three were dead, I might think the paler one. It is hard to tell with this one’s shirt still off.

But the other two? They still have their color, not paler at all, not lifeless. They look like they are sleeping, and their stomachs and chests don’t look like all the air’s gone out of them. There are no adverse reactions (bodily fluids, mucous, foaming you might expect from gassing. They look like they are sleeping

If those ‘killed’ by this attack are all rosy-cheeked children without a mark on them and wrapped in snowy-white sheets then its worth drilling down a little further.

David Kenner of Foreign Policy writes that if the higher estimates are true, it would not only be the worst chemical weapons attack in past two years of warfare in Syria, but also the worst globally since Saddam Hussein killed an estimated 5,000 people with poison gas in the Kurdish town of Halabja during 1988.

That will have some scratching their heads, isn't nerve gas a WMD? Saddam Hussein? Syria? Where was this casual mention of Iraqi WMD warfare by the media during the Bush administration, I used to look for it and didn't see much of it.
