James DiMaggio's family is requesting DNA samples from the family of Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old girl he's accused of kidnapping and whose mother and brother were found dead in his burned home.
The reason? They want to know if he was the biological father of the children, Hannah and Ethan, the family spokesman said.
"We are going to be requesting from the Anderson family that we try to get DNA samples from Hannah. And if they have anything left from Ethan -- that we get a DNA sample," family spokesman Andrew Spanswick told CNN affiliate KGTV. "There has been a lot of rumors that Jim might be the father of either or both children."
Reached by CNN, Spanswick said DiMaggio's sister, Lora, is making the request -- but would not elaborate further.

Hannah was in a car with DiMaggio about 20 hours before he allegedly set fire to his house, police said Tuesday. The two were seen in DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa just after midnight Sunday, August 4, said San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell.
She confirmed reporting from the Los Angeles Times that the two were spotted at a U.S. Border checkpoint. Caldwell did not say what the two were doing together, or if Hannah Anderson was with DiMaggio voluntarily.
CNN was unable to get an Anderson family response to this revelation as well
On Monday, the Anderson family spokeswoman told CNN that DiMaggio left a life insurance policy from his job as a telecommunications tech that named Hannah and Ethan's grandmother, Bernice Anderson, as the beneficiary.
Stacy Hess, the spokeswoman, did not know the dollar amount but other media outlets put it around $110,000
"We find it very strange that he has left this money without any explanation," in explaining the need for DNA tests.

Hmmmmmm, Hmmmmmm ...
Hmmmmm......
Middle finger going up as I smile and suggest you “Go to Hell and Burn”
Ave nice day
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any sicker.
Do we actually KNOW who did the killing and burning??? I don’t think it’s been proved at all. That girl is NOT acting like she’s lost a mother, brother and friend. Something is NOT KOSHER here.
Apparently the DiMaggio family does not trust the police to do even a rudimentary investigation and they just might be right.
They are going to fight each other now for 112K? Really now it’s not that much.
DiMaggio was Best Man at their wedding. Was Hannah born before or after the wedding???
I was wondering about the same things.
Okay here we go. According to one article the parents didnt marry until 2002 when Hannah would have been what ??? — 5 years old.
If DiMaggio was her father or believed that he was her father then that explains all the time he spent with the family and her and it takes off the table his kidnapping of her for some kind of sexual relationship between them.
Bump.
(good as any idea I’ve heard yet.)
The family also wants to see the letters she sent him.

You've been here long enough to know bald men will fight to the death over a comb.
I would think that her paternity would be important regarding the legal disposition of his property in Boulevard.
Unless he left a will his property will go to his sister Lora — unless Hannah turns out to be his daughter.
Why would she and the Anderson family not want to know???
[actually I do know but I am just saying that to be facetious]
Funny, sad...and true.
I don't know about that particular policy, but mine explicitly states it will not pay if I die during the commission of a felony. I'd say kidnapping, murder, arson, and shooting it out with law enforcement types is committing a felony.
It's entirely possible that they feel absolutely sure in the paternity already. Perhaps Hannah strongly resembles other family on the paternal side of the family.
It's possible that Uncle Jim developed an obsessive fantasy that Hannah was his daughter that had no basis in reality.
My middle child and my sister's middle child look more like siblings than they do with their actual siblings and strongly resemble a great grandmother. My youngest is the spitting image of my mother and it was obvious on the sonogram of her facial bone structure in utero.
A simple paternity test would have put that to rest and her DNA was readily available to him for such a test. I doubt that he was the one with the fantasy.
Anything is possible but if Hannah is his daughter then she and not his sister Lora will inherit his property -- thus at this point it is a legal issue amongst everything else.
Also Hannah said regarding her phone that it got burned up in the fire: Can anyone explain how she could have known that despite the fact that no phone was found burned up at the scene???
And if she did leave her phone at the scene then what was she using to make calls to DiMaggio hours later before the phones were turned off???
But by all means the police need to shut down this investigation before they get the truth from Hannah as well as her DNA -- after all there are now more questions than answers. .
