Hundreds of Islamists poured into the street, torching, looting and smashing the villages two churches and a nearby monastery, lashing out so ferociously that marble altars were left in broken heaps on the floor.
Over the next few days, a wave of similar attacks on the Coptic Christian minority washed over the country as Islamists set upon homes and churches, shops and schools, youth clubs and at least one orphanage, killing at least three people, according to an Egyptian human rights group.
And the military-backed government, which has done little to protect Christians, is now trying to capitalize on the church burnings to try to paint the Brotherhood as terrorists.
A Coptic Christian group, the Maspero Youth Union, recorded at least six deaths and the destruction of at least 38 churches, as well as attacks on at least 23 more. An activist with the group, Beshoy Tamry, primarily blamed Islamist leaders for charging their followers with hate and trying to destabilize the country by attacking its weakest citizens.

Liberal thinking... it figures.
They are blaming the Christians for the attacks on themselves.
Of course they are happy the army took over, they are always targeted by Muslim Brotherhood. The article implies that MB targets Christians because Christians complain about being targeted by MB.
An honest article would say that Christians are being attacked by Obama’s allies.
Continued prayers for Our Brothers and Sisters in Egypt..Indeed for those in the Islamic world.
Time to beat those plowshares into swords.
Good grief. My first thought on reading the headline was that the Times had finally noticed all the terrorist attacks on Christians and their churches, and was finally going to do a story on it.
Instead, they say it’s not the attackers’ fault.
Hey, birdcage liner, every day you blame the army and the police for killing all those poor Muslim terrorists. So, how could the army stop them from destroying all those ancient churches without taking some risk of HURTING those poor widdle fellows?
Nevertheless, at least the Slimes is exposing the horror.
“And the military-backed government, which has done little to protect Christians, is now trying to capitalize on the church burnings to try to paint the Brotherhood as terrorists.”
Hey Kareem Fahim,
Moslem or Christian, you’re a disgrace to your religion or lach thereof. If you are an Egyptian, you’re a traitor. If you’re born here you’re an Islamocommunist and a coward to boot.
What you said is akin to one robbing a bank and the government is blamed for not guarding the bank ON PURPOSE TO PAINT THE GUY AS A BANK ROBBER!
Does this make any sense to any sane reader of your toilet paper rag?
FUKF!
This has to be a FIRST. NYT sympathetic to Christian Coptics. Using their demise as a tool to fault the military, for taking out the Morsi backing Muslim Brothernood.
What a crock. When would the Times otherwise give a rip about the Coptics? Not a word from Hillary/Obama/Huma-land, OR, the Times in the past, when the radicals plundered and murdered Christians.
Now, when the MB gets a dose of its own, it’s all about those most helpless, marginalized Christians, getting no protection from those meanies, the Egyptian Military. Obama Kool Aide.
This thing is being deliberately twisted and confused by media. Obama must have screwed up again.
