Rural Coloradans to vote on breaking away as 51st state, angered by liberal policies on guns, energy
DENVER — You've got North Carolina and North Dakota, so why not Northern Colorado?
Voters in several rural Colorado counties will be asked whether they want to form a new state tentatively named Northern Colorado in the November election, a reaction to the Democrat-controlled state legislature's "war on rural Colorado."
The Weld County Commissioners voted unanimously at Monday's meeting to place a measure on the Nov. 5 ballot asking voters whether they want the county to join other rural counties in forming another state.
"The concerns of rural Coloradans have been ignored for years," William Garcia, chairman of the Weld County Commissioners, said in a statement. "The last session was the straw that broke the camel's back for many people. They want change. They want to be heard."
Three other rural counties — Cheyenne, Sedgwick and Yuma — also plan to place the 51st state referendum on the fall ballot. At least three more counties plan to consider the proposal this week at their commission meetings, said Jeffrey Hare, spokesman for the 51st State Initiative.
Known for its agriculture and oil and gas production, Weld is the largest of the Colorado counties exploring a break with the state after the legislature's sharp turn to the left with bills restricting access to firearms and doubling the state's renewable-energy mandate for rural areas.

This would be a great precedent if it occurs, showing other areas how to secede.
AS a Coloradoan outside the area I would vote to let them! ...then move there.
It’s always been the big-city bastions of smut and crime that drive the states. I say go for it, and starve out these parasitic areas.
While I support the idea of Northern Colorado, I really don’t see this happening until the Dems are no longer in power in the State. Perhaps a better fix would be to change the State Senate so that each county has one Senator representing them. This would require a change to the state Constitution and likely just as difficult.
With 64 counties, there would be only about 6 “city” like counties, greatly reducing the power of the cities in the legislative process. Currently the CO State Senate has 35 members (4 years per term, two term limit). Current make up is 20 Dems and 15 Republicans. If the two recall elections are successful, the mix will change to 18 Dems and 17 Republicans heading into the 2014 elections.
Both houses of Congress have to approve by a majority vote.
The president cannot veto it.
I am under the impression that the State itself will have some input into that process. And as long as the State is under the Control of the Dems, it wont happen.
How about the Republic of Texas.
Are the two “white” counties there actually currently in Kansas?
In other news, Moffat County commissioners held a meeting this A.M. with public comments on the 51st State Initiative. Didn't get the notice until too late.
I think I recall some mention of some Nebraska counties wanting to join in some of the early reporting on the “North Colorado” story.
The Colorado legislature must also approve of the action.

Some of the western counties have wanted to join Wyoming for years. My only issue is that gives more power to Omaha
You are right, and I took that for granted. It has to be state approved first which as you say is debatable.
Just wanted to point out what is required for statehood after the state hurdle. The good thing is that OweBowMao plays no part in the process - constitutionally anyway.
Not that that has ever stopped him.
And since the Dems control House, Senate and Governor here in Colorado ......
