Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced Monday evening that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship, less than 24 hours after a newspaper pointed out that the Canadian-born senator likely maintains dual citizenship.
Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship, Cruz said in a statement. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but Im an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.
SNIP
Because I was a U.S. citizen at birth, because I left Calgary when I was 4 and have lived my entire life since then in the U.S., and because I have never taken affirmative steps to claim Canadian citizenship, I assumed that was the end of the matter, Cruz said.

I should know this.
Cruz is my senator. I think he’s a fantastic senator.
If we establish the precedent that American presidents don’t have to be born in America - what does that do to the Democrat pool of candidates?
There is big outside money interested in controlling America - this just removes one of the barriers. For what? A potential candidate whom we believe may win? It’s not worth it.
Ted Cruz was born in 1970.

Ted was born in Canada
His mother was old enough and born in the US (Delaware)
His father was born in Cuba and not an American citizen when Ted was born
The whole family moved (back) to the US when Ted was 4 (1974)
Ted’s father became a US citizen in 2005 according to FReeper JCBreckenridge
So why did Ted’’s father wait 30 years to become a US citizen if he “loves America” Why 2005 ???
At the earliest he could have been naturalized in 1980..
or even earlier..
he arrived here in 1957...
McCain was eligible.
It is what it is.
It was very clear in his case, He was born to two American parents in a foreign land on American sovereign soil.
Did you vote for him?
I did, three times.
“So why did Teds father wait 30 years to become a US citizen if he loves America Why 2005 ???”
You’d have to ask him.
Better question - why would Ted be born in Canada if his father was married to an American citizen and he loved America?
Wouldn’t it be more natural for someone who, by his own account, who escaped Cuba and wanted to make a new life in America - to live in America? Especially with his American wife?
According to you, someone born outside of America to a service member shouldnt be eligible for president.

Neither of the parents of Ted Cruz were in the US service when Ted was born in Canada..
When we were serving overseas it was the norm to try to return to the US for the births of children so that they would not have dual citizenship and so that they would be NBC
one of the first things I was told when I arrived was to not have any children outside the US..
this was 1974...
They were both working oil exploration in Canada, a very Texas thing.
I have lived all over the place.
Both times in the primary? Better than me. I hadn’t heard about him until the runoff with Dewhurst. One of the few bright spots in a terrible election year for us in 2012. Still have my notes.
It was less about NBC than it was about the child having dual citizenship and, perhaps, being subject to a foreign country's military draft.
I’m just playing devil’s advocate here, but how could George Washington, etc. be a natural-born citizen of the United States when the United States wasn’t even a country when they were born?
Sorry if I was rough on you.
Yes, In the Primary the run off and the general.
Dewhurst is a political animal/insider.
I know what he is.
“They were both working oil exploration in Canada, a very Texas thing.
I have lived all over the place.”
I can understand that - Calgary, Alberta is a wonderful area. I’ve lived all over the place too - but if I got married to an American lady here we’d have our kid here. Not in Canada.
When they left to Canada, did they intend to return? Hindsight is 20/20 - we know they got back 4 years later. But, at the time - was that their plan? I’m curious about it.
The question to be answered in much of the discussions is what is the prevailing dominance, the mother or the father, as to citizenship. For me personally I go with what I believe the Founders intended in the Constitution i.e. both parents must be citizens.
You are arguing that the Constitution defines “natural born citizen,” and that it means what you say it means, when it’s clear it doesn’t.
You can cite no significant authority in history who ever agreed with you.
That’s because no significant authority in history ever did agree with you.
I’ve cited the facts, as explained by major historians throughout history.
Ah, but those don’t mean anything, because we have the OPINION of some birther on the internet, who never knew any of the Founding Fathers, who didn’t dedicate his life to the Constitution and the law, in fact, who has no visible legal or historical expertise whatsoever.
Sorry, but your OPINION doesn’t count for jack. And simply asserting that your OPINION is the way it is, without any real authority to back you up, isn’t worth squat.
He’s a fantastic senator. But he’s all ours. Why share with the other 49 states? ;) This way he stays right here and can kick ass for the next 30 years.
Teds Pop lived in Tx all his life after fleeing Cuba as a kid.
They worked in Canada as for 4 years.
Well I can kinda dig that.
US Congress of 1790:
"And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens"
