Why Did the Libertarian Chicken Cross the Road?

The good thing about being a libertarian is that you are motivated by freedom, which is a very noble principle, and you have lots of evidence on your side, whether the issue is economics or personal liberty.

You can’t afford to be smug, of course, since it’s still a big uphill battle to convince politicians not to engage in plunder.

But at least you can sleep soundly at night knowing that you’re on the side of the angels.

And that even means you have self-confidence about your ideas and you can laugh when someone puts together some clever anti-libertarian humor.

Here’s the latest example, sent to me by a TV journalist.

What makes this funny is that libertarians are sometimes quick to defend their rights, even when nobody’s trying to take them away.

Which is why we sometimes get pigeonholed as being weird, like the family in the lower left of this poster, or paranoid, like the guy in the #8 spot of this poster.

But let’s be thankful that there are some libertarians willing to raise a stink about government even if the rest of the world thinks we’re a bit odd. As we’ve seen dozens of times, most recently with the IRS and NSA, bureaucrats and politicians have a compulsive tendency to grab more power and make government more intrusive.

I started yesterday’s post with a mother-in-law joke, so I’ll end today’s post by mentioning the fable of the frog that gets put in a pot of water and doesn’t jump out because the temperature feels comfortable. But then the heat is slowly raised and the frog no longer has the energy to escape when he finally figures out he’s being cooked.

Well, libertarians are the ones who loudly complain when the government puts us into pots.

Why waste a vote on a principled Libertarian candidate when you can invest it in an unprincipled Vichy Republican stalwart who’ll do the Democratic [sic] party’s bidding?

The "liberterian" label has been taken up by a number of factions which disagree with differing parts of the Republicrat platform, but otherwise have little in common. Further, even in cases where different factions may seemingly be united in their opposition to one particular aspect of the Republicrat platform, they may have opposite notions of what should replace it.

Additionally, "libertarian" factions often push a number of things which conservatives should be happy with if certain other things happen first, but which would have pro-leftist side-effects if they're done before those other things. Some "libertarian" factions are pushing for such things in the expectation that the aforementioned preconditions will be met before their push succeeds; others are pushing for them in the hope of achieving the side-effects. Again, it's unclear who should be regarded as enemy or ally.

I have become more of a Libertarian the last few years. I have come to understand that even some Conservatives have no problem useing the Constitution as toilet paper. I cringe whenever anyone tries to push their moral or religious agenda on someone, doesn’t matter if it comes from the left or the right. This whole NSA debacle was brought to us by the Right starting with the damn Patriot act. If we are to survive as a nation more of those who are Conservatives need to move to the Libertarian side. Looking at this thing from a purely Constitutional standpoint, I see no other way. Either you believe the document as written is the law of the land or you don’t. There is no wiggle room.

I can not support Libertarianism as they want to give up on social issues while knowing the Left is using those social issues to take liberty from dissenters.

Libertarianism is the flavor that gives sense to constitutional government. “Leave me alone” is not a bad default position for sovereign citizens in this republic. “Leave us all alone” is a better one.

I’m no libertarian but I recognize that some libertarian ideals will have to be integrated into a true GOP platform if the GOP hopes to have even the slightest chance of winning in the future.

If I were running I would promote the idea of being a lot more reluctant and selective about dumping money and troops into foreign lands. I’m not a fan of drug legalization but would leave it up to the states to legalize marijuana or not. The bulk of the drug war would be fought with secure borders. Ditching federal sentencing guidelines is a no brainer, that sort of thing should always be up to the states and locals. Then there are the obvious things like ending the spying on American citizens etc.

Libertarians: confused liberals of the right. Libertarians are not conservatives. They can’t get elected under the name Libertarian, so they become stealth Republicans flying under the radar so to speak, posing as conservatives hoping they won’t get exposed for what they are. The dope smoking hippies, sodomites and queers, love ‘em.

Why Did the Libertarian Chicken Cross the Road?

To pretend to be a republican.

I love, and will fight for, liberty. I self-describe as a libertarian. There are many here on FR that pounce on me for beliefs that I don’t hold. Our Constitution, if followed, provides liberty. Our culture provides for morality. Our culture is circling the drain, granted. That doesn’t make my desire for liberty any less meaningful...to me at least.

They can’t get elected under the name Libertarian

And when was the last time someone got elected from the Conservative Party? The truth is both those parties represent the extreme of those schools of thought, as does your characterization of libertarians.

We need some of both or we’re going to suffer under marxist rule permanently.

It is that simple.
