The second sonata of the Opus 10 collection is the Piano Sonata in F, Op. 10/2. This is another sonata in three movement format, and the first movement is in 2/4 time and is marked simply allegro. The opening subject is surprisingly short, leads into a C Major transitional passage that drops easily into a a second subject, also in C Major. This second subject features the left and right hands staggered one-half beat off each other and some right-over-left-hand crossovers.
At 3:03, he begins the development in A minor and ranges through the keys, making something very important out of that left-and-right-hand staggering of notes on the off-beat.
At 4:14, he executes a wrong-key recapitulation in D Major but only for 19 bars. It’s a clever way of disorienting the listener. But he works his way gently to F Major to continue his recap, which he completely re-composes. The second subject appears in the correct key of F Major to a bravura end.

The second movement is in 3/4, marked allegretto, and is in F minor. It’s a dark movement with harmonies that are almost like Bach. The central panel moves to D-flat and A-flat Major, but the darkness remains. The opening theme returns with left-and-right-hand staggering.

The finale returns to F Major, 2/4 time, and is marked presto. Lou utilizes a form of counterpoint known as a canon, where the same theme is repeated at staggered intervals in the left and right hand. This sonata is all about left and right hand staggering in different forms. It’s the unifying idea.
