Been to Beale Street once. OK, but over hyped.
I’ll be fine if I never set foot in Memphis again. It’s not a safe place.
My daughter has traveled alone as a young woman through cities and countries around the world & she (being with me at that visit to Beale Street) said Memphis was the only city she ever felt genuinely unsafe in. Which is all the reason I need to avoid it.
I’m talking in comparison to Ulaanbaatar, Hanoi, Bangkok, NY, Seoul.
It’s really unfortunate that it’s not generally safe to visit many American cities. That’s killing a lot of jobs and impoverishing people.
Before Beale Street was “cleaned up” in the 70s no intelligent person would go anywhere near the place. Apparently it’s reverting back.
I live in Memphis. I feel very safe.
Once you leave the interstate....there’s no real safe place in Memphis...as far as I’m concerned (except perhaps the airport). I don’t know what the cops do for a living in town....but it’s not law enforcement.

Don’t know about Hanoi but Ulan Baatar is worse. I’ve never really felt unsafe in Bangkok. Seoul is a very safe city
