“I’m talking in comparison to Ulaanbaatar, Hanoi, Bangkok, NY, Seoul.”

Don’t know about Hanoi but Ulan Baatar is worse. I’ve never really felt unsafe in Bangkok. Seoul is a very safe city

The most violent thing that is likely to happen to you in Bangkok is a snatch and grab unless you are drunk and/or acting stupidly to the extent that would get you killed in the ghetto.

She was in Ulan Baatar in 2002. Also, she was in the city for a small portion of her time in Mongolia. Most of it was way, way out somewhere in a gur. Her comment was that the petty crime, personal theft etc. was off the charts. In light of this discussion I will ask her to revisit the subject and see what she says now.

She had started out at Bangkok and backpacked through all of SE Asia using local transportation. I don't think she was in Hanoi long, more in Saigon.
