One of the state's top lobbyists says sources are telling him that State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Ft. Worth) who is a sudden national figure in Democratic ranks due to her 11 hour filibuster to kill a late term abortion bill, has decided to run or governor in 2014, 1200 WOAI news reports.
"If she does run, I think it will probably be the most exciting race for Democrats since Ann Richards in 1990," Harold Cook, who is a democratic strategist, told 1200 WOAI news.
Davis has said that she will run for either governor or re-election to the state senate next year. She has raised a lot of money, but her campaign war chest pales besides that of likely Republican nominee Greg Abbott, who has raised more than $23 million.
Cook says he suspects that Davis has been told that big money Democratic donors will help her make up money gap with Abbott and make sure she is competitive financially.
"If she indeed makes that decision, they will guarantee that she has a chance to win, or she would not have made it," Cook said.
Davis says she will officially make her decision by Labor Day.
Analysts say Abbott is an overwhelming favorite to win against any candidate the Democrats will put up against him, but a Davis candidacy would demonstrate that Democrats have the ability to run a statewide race. A Davis candidacy would also energize the party's base, which has been demoralized over twenty years of bad candidates like Bill White and Ron Kirk, 'great hopes' that sputtered like Dan Morales and Henry Cisneros, and a lack of a 'bench' where the candidates of the future are born.
Love. That. ABORTION BARBIE for governor of Texas!!
Expect lots of out of state cash to pour into her coffers.
Can’t wait to show up at her rallies with Ziploc baggies full of apple juice...
Wait don’t tell me. 2014 will the next year of the Woman.
I’ll apply what I’m about to say to Rand Paul as well as to this flavor of the month.
How dysfunctional have we become that getting up and talking for 11 hours makes you some modern day Solon? All they did was friggin’ talk. For a few hours. And now they’re the best thing since sliced bread. I don’t get it.
She should be proud that all her new found fame is on the backs of aborted children.
Centered from Austin with the Hill Country minimal showing support...
Out here in West Texas, we just smile and nod.
Or Hide n’ Watch as they say.
She stands on the shoulders of mangled, dead humans. A wannabe Pol Pot.
Sorry, I read right over the “out of state” part...
I think that’s great. It will be fun to watch the drubbing.
Yeah, and if you bring out facts in the debate, then you’re a misogynistic a-hole.
What wil be her bumper sticker? I (heart) Dead Babies?
The only concerrn I have is that Texas did elect Ma Richards.
Texas ping
Just as Houston’s lesbian mayor received out of state support.
If they don’t live here, why give them a say in local elections?
Back in the Yellow Dog democrat days. Also, it was easier when her main competition shot himself in the foot.
Ma Richards won with the more traditional Democrat class warfare “yer gettin’ SCROOOOOOD!” platform.
Davis is all-abortion-all-the-time. Since I’m sure that ranks at the VERY TOP of issues for those electing the next Texas Governor. /SARC sarcsarcsarcsarcsarc
