MANY American newspapers were doomed to decline from the moment the Internet arrived on personal computers. But The Washington Post, just sold off unexpectedly to Amazons Jeff Bezos, was never really one of them.
This is something the sentimental send-offs for the Graham family and its stewardship tended to ignore. As disruptive as the Internet has been for journalism, The Post was uniquely positioned to succeed amid the chaos. And it has struggled, in part, because the papers leaders failed to step into an online-era role that should have been theirs for the taking.
The nature of that role is suggested by a scene in the Thatcher-era British sitcom Yes, Prime Minister in which a politician explains who actually reads the British papers.
The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country, he tells his aides. The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country. The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by people who own the country. The Morning Star a paper founded as a Communist organ is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country. And The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

For want of the truth the Post was lost.............
Did the internet kill print and broadcast media?
Or are its mortal wounds, self-inflicted?
Damn you , Al gore.
No matter, the stench of the leftist media
Will linger on in the form of its carcaii uhh carcasses
Now if the NY Slimes would just go away.
THE WASHINGTON POST WAS SOLD FOR A PITTANCE OF WHAT IT WAS ONCE WORTH BECAUSE OF ITS CONTENT... PERIOD... END OF STORY!
Seriesly !
The NYT, WASH Post, LAT, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NBC and PBS, etc, etc, are all written/produced for people who wish the country was ruled by the old Soviet Union.
Your demise is predicated by your insufferable arrogance. Instead of reporting the truth you pushed your despicable agenda to destroy the world’s last best hope for freedom, thus ensuring your uselessness.
I foresee a rosy future for you in the fish wrapping or birdcage lining business. These will surely upgrade your content.
A total disregard for the news killed the post.
The NYT is just kept afloat by the shear volume of bird cages in NYC.
THE WASHINGTON POST WAS SOLD FOR A PITTANCE OF WHAT IT WAS ONCE WORTH BECAUSE OF ITS CONTENT...
True, but probably not the only reason. With the Internet now pervasive, all print media are seeing reduced customers. With the country split ideologically, and no conservative ‘national’ newspapers other than the WSJ, it is the leftist papers that are left to fight over their half of a diminishing market. Same in television; Fox has the conservatives and all the others fight over the liberal half.
By the way, do you notice where the best opportunity is? Sorry Fox.
We could only wish our press was even half as diverse as the “Yes, Prime Minister” quote would suggest.
The WSJ is only conservative or libertarian on some issues on one page, the rest is the same kind of crap as the others. It was WSJ reporters who slimed Clarence Thomas.
I've noticed that CNN is showing tinges of balance on occasion. Could it be that they noticed the trajectory of their ratings?
FWIW http://digmysite.net/politico.com suggests that Politico is valued around 4 million dollars. If this valuation is even remotely correct, Mr. Douhat’s argument is meaningless.
The Wcompost sold for a fraction of its former worth because it's financial value declined precipitously. The reason for this is due to both content AND competition, but its biased reporting has a lot to do with its loss of value.
We subscribed to the Post for years (local paper for us), mainly because my wife wanted the “Cooking” section and she also did the crossword every day. My wife passed away in December 2010. One of the first things I did after she died was cancel the subscription.
Hey NYT...check your airspeed and altitude.
You’re not far behind.
And I’m watching with glee in anticipation of your upcoming crash with no survivors.
I’ll have some fries with my burger, ex-journalists.
“it is the leftist papers that are left to fight over their half of a diminishing market”
Yes and some of them cannot even read cursive.
The last thing big government or anti business democrats know about is THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. These papers are going down the tubes because they lost the paying customers who financially punished these MARXIST MORONS for crapping on this country.
