Remington Begins Construction on New Ammo Plant in Arkansas (VIDEO)

In a move that should make gun owners across the nation happy, Remington just broke ground on their newest ammo plant in Lonoke, Arkansas. This comes at a time where ammunition is scarce and prices are high.

The facility is expected to employ 50 to 100 people when it’s up and running, and should have the space and tooling to manufacture something to the tune of 2 to 3 billion rounds of ammo a year.

If construction goes according to schedule, the facility will be up and running in June of 2014. It will have 35,000 square-feet of floor space and cost Remington $32 million to complete.

“We continue to invest in all of our manufacturing operations because we are committed to ensuring quality, increasing product availability and improving on-time delivery,” said Kevin Miniard, Remington COO. “This significant investment in Lonoke is a testament to that commitment. Our customers can count on Remington to invest in its manufacturing operations in order to ensure that its facilities are state-of-the art and its employees are the best in the industry.”

Although production won’t begin for another 10 months the facility should still please shooters everywhere. Even now, as ammo starts to become more available, the prices — while admittedly lower than their peak earlier this year following the calls for increased gun control that had gun owners stripping shelves — the prices are still higher than this time last year. Increased supply will help bring the cost of shooting back down to reasonable levels.

These new ammo plants are some of the first major expansions in American ammunition manufacturing capacity in about 10 years, and couldn’t happen sooner.

The supply of ammo will reach an equilibrium again, just as it always does.

One thing that has truly been missed in this latest turbulence is the debt of gratitude we all owe to Walmart. By not jacking up their prices on ammo they have prevented an almost certain permanent inflation in ammo prices. We will see if their downward price pressure can stem the tide.

I am not a pro or anti-Walmart guy, but shooting enthusiasts should give credit where credit is due. They have earned my business for ammo and I have lots of friends who feel the same way.

Well, that takes care of me. What about the rest of y'all?

There has been an ammunition factory in Loanoke, AR for as long as I can remember.

Taxes are going to have to go up for the feds to soak up the additional supply.

That’s Remington, this may be an expansion of that plant. I think the existing plant manufactures shotgun shells.I would like to know what the new plant will manufacture,.22LR?

I drive by it on I-40 going to Tennessee from Oklahoma quite often. Lately I’ve fantasized about an “Italian Job” scenario with the price of ammo.

Yeah, me too, but that CraigsList ad "For Sale: 24,835 tons of ammunition. Serious inquiries only" is gonna make tongues wag in the wrong places.

Even 22lr! I am sick of seeing 22lr for $7.50 for a box of 50.

Time for Remington to pull the plug on its NY operations and relocate taking its tax base with it.

Should have mentioned it’s exit 407 on I-40. Think Dollywood.

Remington was established in 1816. NY state probably thought there was no way they'd make good on their promise to leave NY if they passed their gun laws -

Now I hope they follow the lead of some other ammo manufacturers and refuse to sell to gov’t or law enforcement - and leave the purchasing to the public

Remington is definitely tied down to New York for the foreseeable future, due to state-financed facility renovation and expansion. So far, I haven’t heard anything about them moving their corporate headquarters out of NY.

If you have a military friend you can get him to buy you a box at the BX/PX. I got a box of 325 .22LR for $15 that way.

Thanks, but I live too far from any military PX.
