After nearly two decades of continual victories in state legislatures, gun-rights proponents have suddenly hit some turbulence. Despite paralysis on the issue in Washington, mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado, Sandy Hook, Connecticut, and elsewhere have led five states to tighten their gun laws.
Four of those states are liberal bastions, but the fifth is the formerly red state of Colorado, home of not only Aurora but also the Columbine massacre. Unsurprisingly, the Centennial State is also where the gun lobby is looking to make a statement in return – with recalls set to take place September 10 against two state legislators, including term-limited state Senate President John Morse, a Democrat.
From a legislative standpoint, these recalls wouldn’t have much practical effect. Even if both are successful, Democrats will retain control of the Senate. Furthermore, Democrats hold both the governor’s office and the lower house of the state legislature, so gun-control policy is unlikely to change post-recall. This is more a symbolic recall. Proponents hope it will have national implications, scaring other officials in swing districts throughout the country away from gun measures. In fact, this won’t be the first time gun-rights proponents have used this playbook -- we saw a near-carbon copy back in 1994. The aftermath of that recall two decades ago might show just what the gun-rights community can hope to accomplish.
In 1993 and 1994, Democrats passed a number of gun-control laws both at the federal and state level. The new laws were an issue in races throughout the country in November 1994 when Republicans swept the House and Senate, as well as many state-level races.

I hope that both Morse and Giron are recalled by landslide margins and that it is a harbinger of things to come. The country is in danger.

Colorado Freepers, please let the rest of us know how the recall is going. Sending a pro Second Amendment message to your legislature & governor is important, not just for your state, but the other 49. If the recall falters, the socialist liberals will rejoice and go into the 2014 elections strong.
There will be a landslide victory except for one big problem. The gun laws this year got a lot of press coverage. One most know nothing about is an election law. If a person claims to be moving into a new to them district they can vote in one election in that district.
We fear that busloads of Denver/Boulder democrats will descend on Colorado Springs and Pueblo to vote for the rats.

I predicted a decisive win for the Republicans, and that still holds, with the exception that you noted.
Can you expound on that a bit?
Do the new voters have to show some proof of residency? If so, they are going to meet a lot of resistance, as those are fairly small district, and fraud will be easily spotted.

Interesting recall ballot—both sides allowed to make a statement on the ballot. Pro-recall statement is well thought out, anti-recall statement is pure emotion.

Doesn’t sound like a responsible voting plan to me. But then, I like the idea of living people casting votes...kind of old fashioned that way.
I am going from memory. KLZ 560AM in Denver Covered this. You are right about Pueblo. We will see if 130% of registered voters show up. That is how much they will have to cheat to beat the angry masses. There are lots of gun owners in Pueblo.

How deliberately we forget. Colorado is also the home of Jeanne Assam a former police officer and concealed-carry permit holder who shot an attempted mass murderer while guarding her church.
Much more important are the 2014 elections in the state when half the Senate and all of the House will be up along with the Governorship.
I’m not crazy about recalls, they are an invention of the progressives.
I’m not so sure about Giron’s seat but Morse’s should be held by a Republican.
Saw a Giron ad on the tube today. Haven’t seen anything yet from her opponent. The Morse/Herpin race is well publicized here in the Springs, and I have yet to speak with anyone who is keen on keeping Morse. Ballots are to be mailed out on Monday. Keep your fingers crossed and send an extra $20 to the NRA this month.
I hate the concept of recall elections (if the term is four years, it should be four years, barring impeachment for crimes), and wish that all of those states who fell for that Progressive bunkum a century ago struck it from their constitutions. But as long as the law is in the books, I am all for using it to get rid of liberal RATs; they certainly have no qualms about using it to try to get rid of Republicans.
Pueblo County is going to be difficult, that’s been a Dem stronghold for a long time, part of a cluster of Hispanic counties into northern NM. It last voted Republican for President in 1972 (even Denver went Republican in 1980) and consistently voted against GOP Senate & House incumbents, nevermind legislative ones. Even if the recall is won, it may go back to the Dems in ‘14.
Yeah I checked out both districts on our campaigns.
Under previous lines (I don’t know how much they differ) in the good (well not all that good in CO) year of 2010, for what was an open seat, Giron (facing a Republican with a Spanish name) won by only 10 points in what I would have thought would be a safe rat seat. Her predecessor was unopposed in 2006 and won a landslide in 2002 over a Republican with an English name.
Morse crushed a Republican incumbent (who had narrowly won in 2002 with a Libertarian taking 9%) in 2006 and was narrowly reelected in 2010, with a filthy Libertarian taking more than the difference. His district is Colorado Springs.
Both seats are up in 2014, why not try to recall Senators that aren’t up till 2016 instead? Morse is the President but his removal would just be for one year and he’s term limited. It says these are first legislative recalls in State history. I don’t know how it works it’s like Cali or like Wisconsin but I hope we a candidate with the right kind of name in Giron’s district.
