I dont like to plug, honestly, but my anthology Mark Steyns Passing Parade includes an essay written twelve years ago, upon the death of Washington Post proprietor Kay Graham. Excerpt:
The medias sense of proportion is never more out of whack than when bidding farewell to one of its own, but even so the passing of Katharine Graham set impressive new standards of risibility: The Most Powerful Woman In America, The Most Powerful Woman In The World, Americas Queen, Kays Amazing Grace, Oh, Kay, Special KayNo Kay, Why?, funnily enough, though the question is certainly worth asking...

Bezos bought this for political power only. He paid 250 million, for an empty shell. If it was a good deal, liberal fraud Warren Buffett would have bought it.
Everything you need to know about the Washington Post and the horrendous family that (used to) own it is in the fact that that flaming incompetent and liar Robert MacNamara was a member of the Board of Directors.
Buffett doesn't buy assets, he buys investments. The Post is just an investment (and a losing bet at that.) Bezos' purchase is likely to try to leverage the back issue library into something of value. I don't think he has the slightest intentions or thought about running a printed newspaper.
I agree.
Mark Steyn ping.
BTW, I personally liked this Steyn NRO Corner post better:
“The paramilitarization of American life proceeds apace. Following the seven armed undercover agents required to confront a female college student in last months sparkling-water stand-off and the 13 armed officers needed to take down a baby deer called Giggles, in Cook County the other day five-to-seven police officers showed up at the Victory Centre senior living facility to tase, fire at, and kill a 95-year-old man for refusing to take his medication:”

Thanks for the ping neverdem.
On the flip side, he could have ended that call to his daughter with "and I found a way to give you a million bucks."
You’re right, that’s a very important post. Steyn has collected some very disturbing stories. The militarization of law enforcement and now the bureaucracy is going too far.
I saw somewhere that the purchase included Kaplan. I have to wonder if there isn’t an education play involved, too. Their problems helped drag the Post down, but I still think there’s a big future in online education done right.
Text book ‘rentals’ are doomed.
Kindle has made sure of that!
And L.A. is buying everyone an iPad.
Did Robert Strange McNamara ever officially shed his so-called “R” label?
I didn’t know Kaplan was in the deal. Thanks for the info.
Exactly. When you look around, his “rivals” (though friendly rivals and not exactly direct competitors though they do compete in small ways for government cloud contracts and the like) in big tech include GOOGLE, which probably syndicates more news than anyone and could easily flip a switch to distribute their own news; Apple; Facebook - which distributes all kinds of information... Bezos is just one more in a long line of tech titans who want the political power of information distribution. He doesn’t want to be left out of the game.
” Bezos is just one more in a long line of tech titans who want the political power of information distribution. He doesnt want to be left out of the game.”
How I see it as well. It’s petty cash, anyway.
