More than 80 lawmakers have called on the Obama administration to allow gay men to donate blood.
The lawmakers say the administration should change what they say is an "outdated" policy.
Eighty-two lawmakers in the House and Senate signed on to the letter, including Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). Enzi was the only Republican to sign the letter.
They said Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius should re-evaluate blood donation criteria that ban gay men from donating blood for life.

if this happens, we're going have to self donate and keep our own blood in blood banks for our use only....
better yet, I think we should grab the average gay guy off the street, get a unit of blood, and infuse it into one of these legislatures kids....no testing needed...
It's only good for about 6 weeks, I think.
If you ever have an emergency operation, you can worry about whether the donor had AIDS. But on the plus side, you can feel good that no sodomite felt insulted about being refused from making a blood donation.
Excellent point and this is a twist on the common leftist gun control talking point...”If only one life is saved”...
I am in the same boat. Every time I get forgetful I wonder if the Mad Cow onset is here for me.
What happened in France?
I think the Red Cross has something to say about who they take blood from. I seem to remember they take queer blood but use it for plasma. there’s no federal facility, except the military in emergencies, that I can think of, that actually draws blood. Maes you wonder what these geniuses are actually talking about?
I thought that one could be infected with HIV for several months before it would even show up on a test...
I believe that is true.
Astounding! Absolutely astounding!
With the stroke of a pen Enzi pissed away the one advantage he had over Cheney in his primary race.
Words fail me...

The ...”if only one life is saved...” is a load of leftist drivel that doesn’t survive critical scrutiny (abortion and death penalty, for example).
In the case of blood contamination, however, the consequences are real and certain.
What happened in France?
*******
Even after it was known HIV was transmitted in blood products, several French pharmaceutical companies distributed HIV contaminated products worldwide. Some say 6-8K people (mostly hemophiliacs) were infected. The USA and other countries came up with new blood treatment methods and screening methods to improve the supply (this was in mid-1980s).
While the rest of the world stopped taking blood from homos, the French kept on doing it and a lot of French, as well as others, got infected with HIV. It was a huge scandal in Europe. The French government was involved in covering it up and some French health ministers got convicted of contributing to murder (but most were let go).
The lesson is you can’t let corrupt PC government bureaucrats make decisions like this. Their ideology trumps the common good and evil and suffering is always the end result. Kinda sounds like the USA these days.
Of course congress has their personal blood banks for themselves and their families, so like every law they inflict on us, they won’t be affected.
Eighty-two out of 535... close to 15%.
About the same percentage of the total population which suffers from serious psychological and emotional handicaps.
Personally, I don't care about the proposal, so long as "Truth in Packaging" laws are religiously (if you'll pardon the expression) observed.
Like what? (Not disputing, just curious.)
He must be getting some pressure from either a family member or someone who has some skeleton-in-a-closet info on him.
YUP, very queer of him. It seems odd & out of character. I suspect he is listening to polling experts and consultants who told him to swing left a little on social issues because he is AFRAID of hyped up RINO Liz Cheney challenge.
Are you donating to a family member or to a good friend?
About a year ago I read that 5% of the people on the national kidney wait list are FORMER kidney donors.
That put a chill down my spin.
In the past I had thought seriously about making an altruistic donation.
I will still take the risk for friends and family, but pure altruism, sorry, that impulse has ended.
That means, how much time must pass before an initial infection can first be detected.
The shortest “Window” period I found was 9 days.
4-8 weeks seems to be the generally accepted “Window.”
Almost every source recommended re-testing at 3 months and 6 months for absolute certainty.

A group of people who dip their appendages in $hit and then put them in their mouth are going to spread lots of disease.
