MSNBC's Toure Neblett Deceptively Edits Magic Johnson Comments About Football Player's N-Word
Newsbusters ^ | August 3, 2013 | Noel Sheppard

As NewsBusters has often reported, the folks at MSNBC have a disturbing habit of deceptively editing videos to radically change their meaning.

Maybe that's where MSNBC's Toure Neblett learned this, for on Friday, he dramatically edited a Magic Johnson tweet about Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper:

Touré ✔ @Toure

RT @MagicJohnson: Riley Cooper's teammates will never forgive him, I don't care what they say publicly. 10:09 PM - 2 Aug 2013

For those unaware of the controversy, Cooper was videotaped at a Kenny Chesney concert saying, "I will jump that fence and fight every n---er in here." He has since been dismissed from team activities while he seeks counseling.

From what Neblett retweeted, one would think Johnson had no sympathy for Cooper. Sadly, that wasn't the complete tweet sent by Johnson. Here's the full one:

Earvin Magic Johnson ✔ @MagicJohnson

Riley Cooper's teammates will never forgive him, I don't care what they say publicly. Riley should be given a second… http://say.ly/Rhf6pKt 10:01 PM - 2 Aug 2013 Magic Johnson's post "Riley Cooper's teammates will..."

Riley Cooper's teammates will never forgive him, I don't care what they say publicly. Riley should be given a second chance. People will never look at Riley Cooper the same.

Apparently Neblett didn't like the idea of Riley being given a second chance. If that's the case, then he should have said so in his own tweet.

But to edit Johnson's this way is unethical and goes against Twitter etiquette.

If Neblett didn't want his readers to see Johnson's complete tweet, he should have sent what's called a "modified tweet" denoted by an "MT" at the beginning of the post.

Failing this, Neblett deceived his readers about what Johnson wrote.

Makes you wonder how often Neblett does this.

I suspect that NFL players use the N word frequently. Particularly on game day.

So what is the big deal on this? What fence? Why fight everyone? What is the story?

I only just got a whiff a while back that some “nobody NFL player” was more important for That Word Which Must Not Be Spoken*TM than some other much more grievous assault.

I learned two things from this article:

1. Magic Johnson is a gentleman.

2. Toure Neblett is not.

Don’t go calling this lukewarm cup of over-creamed latte by two names. His name will always be just Toure. Period. Like Cher. Like Adele. Like Beyonce. Like the liberal girl he is.

ESPN and the radio sports yakkers had to learn a new name beside “Tiger, A-Rod and LeBron.”

Riley Cooper, a backup receiver for the Eagles, was apparently at a Kenny Chesney concert and had had several drinks. He wished to go backstage, was prevented from doing so by a black security guard, became aggrieved and announced that he was eager to jump a security fence and fight every black person there, with the racial slur used instead of 'black person'. This scene was recorded on someone's phone and promptly uploaded to YouTube or Instagram or some other social media site.

“Nigger” has been used in scholastic football for years, practically on every play. Why should things change in the National Felon League?

I will care about the faux outrage over the Riley comments after ANY news outlet treats Alec Baldwin to the same level of scrutiny.

I won't bother to hold my breath.

Yes, and the word "bitch" has become pretty standard in the language too. It used to apply only to women, but over the last 20 years, it is now applied everywhere.

I'm gonna make you my bitch, MF!

Or by gay men.

Oh what a bitch he is.

So he should be chastised mostly for the threats of abuse and assault!

But no, the big news is he used The Only Forbidden Word. Never mind he might beat someone to a pulp, that’s OK and to be expected. But uttering a word is unforgivable!
