At 162,000, the July jobs report fell short of expectations and well shy of whisper numbers for payroll figures above 200,000. In addition, job tallies were revised down for May and June and average hourly earnings fell 0.1% in July, the first decline since October.
The data disappointed Wall Street economists but are consistent with the trends Dan Alpert, managing partner at Westwood Capital, cited in a recent report: The fact is that the U.S. employment situation is more of a wounded beast than a bull, he writes.
According to Alperts analysis, 69% of the jobs created in the second quarter and 57% in the first half of 2013 were in the three lowest-paying sectors of the economy: retail trade, administrative and waste services, and leisure and hospitality. These jobs, which account for 33% of all private sector jobs, pay an average of $15.80 per hour.
What youre seeing is now the spreading of low wage growth, he says, noting those trends continued in Friday's July jobs report. Really we have become a nation of hamburger flippers, Wal-Mart sales associates, barmaids, checkout people and other people working at very low wages.
The growth of low-wage jobs helps explain why the majority of Americans continue to believe the economy is in recession, despite a falling unemployment rate now down to a four-year low of 7.4% a record-setting stock market rally and a rebound in the housing market.
Taking it a step further, Alpert says the low-wage trend also explains why GDP growth remains so weak despite monthly average private sector job growth of nearly 200,000 in the past year.

He used to play a mean trumpet.
Indeed. He smoked herb!
Correct. We are becoming Russia under Stalin,
And worse, in Obamaville, burger flippers can’t work more than 29 hrs. a week so they aren’t an insurance drag on their employer. They will be much poorer burger flippers than ever.
At this rate, we can compete successfully with China.
Sadly, the members of The Tijuana Brass never made it beyond the border fence and are still awaiting amnesty it seems.
Too bad the GOP can’t be bothered to carpet bomb the media with these facts while King Barry is camped on Martha’s Vinyard. The optics are terrible and the kenyan’s second term agenda would be knee capped.

Back when Bush was POTUS, Pelosi and the Dems snarked at him for creating “McJobs”
That’s a term the MSM put in storage in Jan 2009.
Yep. The Soviets may have had "100% employment" but this was only because they had people "employed" to stand in front of a public restroom and sell toilet paper to those who needed it.
Actually, they still have people employed in such fields.

The problem is the beltway GOP has also. All they need to do is just run clips of Reid & Pelosi slamming W. for 300,000 jobs created. Too much work I guess.
Thank you Walmart and all the people that shop there. Keep supporting those low wage, minimum work hour companies and there are less and less people that can afford to spend at your place of business.
Insanity that conservatives seem not to understand this basic principal, instead hanging on to the idea a company like Walmart should be free.
Interesting.
His best song was "Work Song".
Now he analyses work reports.
We’re not a nation of “hamburger flippers”—we’re a nation of hamburger flippers and coffee pourers! Hooray for us!
While we’re on the topic....why do hamburger flippers get maligned while coffee pourers hold an esteemed position in society? For starters, a coffee pourer can easily be replaced by a vending machine. It’s much easier to make and pour your own coffee than it is to make your own burger. So where do coffee pourers get their holier-than-thou ‘tude?
I think it started when the art fags decided that consuming large quantities of coffee was healthier than consuming meat and they all started hanging out in coffee shops. Some of them decided to dedicate their lives to their passion after graduating college with a liberal arts degree. With no job skills and an ego the size of Detroit, they dubbed themselves “baristas” to counter the “loser” image. Yeah, that’s probably it.
Hamburger flipping is a manufacturing job.
The more hamburger flippers there are, the more hamburgers there are to choose from.
Imagine a world without hamburger flippers. We’d all have to eat at Der Weinerschnitzel.
