The president of a Wisconsin animal shelter is furious after the state Department of Natural Resources raided the facility with armed agents, detained volunteer workers and killed a baby deer named Giggles.
Im furious, said Cindy Schultz, president of the Society of St. Francis in Kenosha, Wis. We are a no-kill shelter. And they killed her. They killed Giggles. Im furious furious.
Schultz told Fox News an Illinois family found a baby fawn that had been abandoned by her mother. The family brought the deer to the Wisconsin shelter.
Staff members nicknamed the deer Giggles.
Wisconsin law bans residents or shelters from possessing any live wild animals without a license. Wisconsin does not rehabilitate deer so if they find an abandoned fawn, the creature is left to die, Schultz said.
We took it of course and we made arrangements to transfer the deer to an animal reserve in Illinois, she said. The day before she was supposed to leave, we had the raid.
On July 15 DNR agents and four deputy sheriffs staged the surprise raid in what staff workers called a massive and intimidating show of force.

Some. I still think this was a job for at most 2 men.
At least with typhoid there is a test that will eventually show an active infection.
Chronic wasting disease? It's a prion disease like Mad Cow, Kuru or Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, no treatment, no cure, and more to the point, THERE IS NO TEST!
You would willing risk spreading a horrible, slow, nasty wasting disease to a safe area? A disease we think might spread to humans?
I'm glad you aren't in charge of public health.
Heck, you'd probably throw open the borders to anyone who could crawl across, no matter how ill, no matter what diseases they carry, as long as they vote for the right party, work for the right wage, or have lots of cute kids!
oh wait...
It sets a bad precedent...
Obama’s death squad
I am certainly not one who is widely known for my compassion, nor have I ever been accused of being a bleeding heart.
The DNR is very much like every states Child Protective Services.
It's really hard and ugly to go after the very real and horrible abusers, but it's so much easier to justify one’s government paycheck by prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law, any technical violations by the passive law abiding people.
The laws will be changed.
Because people do blame agencies like the DNR, for lacking common sence.
The question is, when the SHTF, which side people like you will side with.
Not that it will matter to the outcome....
Yeah, but there is more background. Besides the quarantine issue, in an earlier thread someone mentioned that this “shelter” had a habit of dognapping purebreds from their owners’ back yards, spaying or neutering them and selling them to unsuspecting buyers. Don’t know how accurate that is, but if true it gives some insight into what situation the LEOs were going into.
Still rather heavy handed, IMHO...
OK but did they need to send NINETEEN LEO’s? Sounds like overkill to me.
Setting aside the DNR raid, that Illinois family is responsible for the death of the fawn. The doe DID NOT ABANDON her baby. The family interfered with nature when they should have left well enough alone.
While the little thing was sweet as pie, my issues aren’t with the deer being killed. It’s an animal. A non-domesticated animal at that. My issue is with the way that this raid went down. How about sending one, maybe two, officials to the shelter to explain the laws and the potential consequences (legal and disease) to the workers? They staked it out and donned body armor for God’s sake! Not only is this completely uncalled for, but it is a huge waste of our money.
When/if the SHTF, I want to be able to eat deer harvested in my neck of the woods without having my brains slowly rot out from prion disease.
This fawn had the misfortune of being from an area that is infested with Chronic Wasting Disease, compounded my the double misfortune of being under the dubious care of an “animal lover” who wanted to ship it to an uncontaminated area.
We can back it up further and blame the bleeding heart liberals who couldn’t wrap their Disney-numbed minds around the concept that the is no deer daycare. A mommy deer leaves a fawn in a safe (as much as anything in the wild is safe) area while she feeds. A fawn alone is not a fawn forsaken.
Fair enough. That reply was NOT stupid.
And we are sure this didn't happen? Knowing how the press tells us everything and all. Not arguing, just wondering.
Slackers, only a deer and no dog.
Well duh! Nineteen is total overkill! They only sent 13...
See post 19 and the text of the story.
"July 15" is where the 15 comes from. The number of DNR agents isn't specified.
Damn dude.
Take a Valium.
I am an animal lover. To be perfectly frank, I don’t really care what happens to humans.
I mean just look at this post you wrote me.
I’d rather spend time with a fawn with Mad Deer disease than you anytime.
Do you have Mad Human disease? Because it really seems like you do.
I sure hope it doesn’t spread to anyone else...oops way to late for that, isn’t it...
It is in the link at post #37, along with the crucial Chronic Wasting Disease detail.
Far, far too late.
I wasn't quarantined...
You bring up an excellent point about the press; however, I still think it’s heavy handed and expensive. Let’s say that they had contacted the shelter and experienced resistance. Let’s also say that the real response, not the news’ version, was only 25% of what was reported. That’s still too much.
Good points.
