Georgia State University’s official roster of more than 300 campus organizations includes everything from the Bengali Student Association to the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Club. But one student group you won’t find on the list — the new White Student Union — is already making headlines nationwide.
Freshman Patrick Sharp says he launched the White Student Union this summer in order to recognize and appreciate white culture. As he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “All we want to do is celebrate white identity. This is about being in touch with who you are as a white person and being proud of that.” Although the group has not been recognized by the university, Sharp says a handful of students have already joined.
It is unlikely that the union will receive a charter from the university. To do so, it would need to find a faculty advisor, which Sharp concedes would be difficult. What’s more, several students have already complained to the Atlanta school’s administration after seeing the club’s flyers posted around campus. While Sharp is aware that people will accuse his group of being racist, he tells the Constitution, “I’ve already heard some of that and I don’t care what they have to say.” He added, “Why is it when a white person says he is proud to be white he’s shunned as a racist?”
The university has taken no action to ban the group. According to the Constitution, Doug Covey, vice president for student affairs, responded to complaints by saying that the group had a right to exist and practice free speech. It will also be allowed to meet in common areas on campus....

I was thinking about the Australian Aborigines as I typed my post. I don’t recall how they were categorized in my anthropology course, but I don’t think they were considered a fourth race. I remember several theories about their pattern of migration to Australia. Here is an interesting sentence or two from Wiki:
“In a genetic study in 2011, researchers found evidence, in DNA samples taken from strands of Aboriginal people’s hair, that the ancestors of the Aboriginal population split off from the ancestors of the European and Asian populations between 62,000 and 75,000 years ago—roughly 24,000 years before the European and Asian populations split off from each other.”
Their darker skin could be explained by tens of thousands of years in Australia.
I say the we should abolish the phrase “acting white” due to it's racist overtone and substitute it with the phrase “acting successful”.
If that happens, all the white volunteers at the social ministries will have to quit for their own safety and the black ‘clients’ will have nowhere to go and will grow destitute.
Understood. I'm just trying to sort out the semantics. Supposedly "black" is a race characterized by African ancestry, but Clarence Thomas, Walter Williams, et al aren't considered authentically "black". That seems to imply a black stereotype. I suspect "white culture" is just another stereotype.

We want folks to be free to be who they are, to ply their talents, and to be all they can be, LIVE and BE FREE. Hell, we tore this country apart against our cousins in England and our brothers on this continent for freedom... white folks have as much right these days to freedom of expression as anybody. And yes, we recognize the evils of past generations, but we will not bow to the pressure of condemnation for past generations. We will not grovel like Chris Matthews, we know our freedoms, and ain't nobody gunna take em away... no matter how much they try to impugn us.
We just want to Live and Let Live, but we sure as hell aint gunna be subservient to the likes of racist whiners like Jesse Jackson, Obama, Rev Wright, Al Sharpton, the NAACP or the Congressional Black Caucus. Aint it funny, nobody has lifted a finger to hurt one hair of the heads of those just mentioned, even though they are despicable persons by most standards of decency. Yet they scream and whine like some old fashioned lynch mob is after them... guys, those days are long past over... Ya gotta move on... we have... Live and Let Live. Stop trying to put white folks into the slavery of condemnation, or haven't you heard, that's just plain wrong.
Scary is that there will be a large number of White Guilt Liberals who will attack a White Student Union...
Sorry about that...I knew where you were comming from. I just went to the absurd to point out the absurd.
I do however think that if we take control of the conversation and replace “acting white” with “acting successful” it will make people re-evaluate the saying.
White culture:
Innovation. Rule of Law. Recognition of natural law as guarantor of basic, putatively inalienable, rights.
There was a time when people in Europe would say, “This is the latest invention from the Americans . . .”, because the innovations seemed to happen so quickly and came one upon the other.
Emancipation. Slavery had been going on for 1000’s of years, principally by the Africans (Egyptians), Persians, and Romans. It wasn’t until the Civil War that the eradication of slavery became a world cause.
Marriage. Actually, this is a Jewish invention, and eradicated rampant homosexuality as a means of subjugating opposing tribes. Yep, they’d conquer a king, strip them, and the conquering king would bugger him in front of his own people. As such, we are backsliding, of late, and no pun intended.
I could go on, but the reason why we don’t celebrate White History Month is because we’d be celebrating it 365 days of the year.
Not my opinion...it is a fact of Zoology. Try looking up the concept of biological classification (otherwise known as taxonomy) before your write that which you do not understand. And by the way, I have my Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology.
Whoever taught you that is an idiot who doesn’t understand zoology. What were the credentials of that professor?
Actually, he was a visiting professor from USC (or UCLA) who was working on his Ph.D., and he was Egyptian. Back around 1967.
I should apologize to you...I realized that my reply sounds snarky...I didn’t intend that. I stand by my statement that there is not such thing as race...scientifically. If a cultural anthropologist wants to opine on non-scientific classifications for humanity, that does not change the fact that there is no such thing biologically. If you were speaking “culturally” then I see your point...my issue is that such a classification is meaningless scientifically.
No need to apologize, as I understood what you meant. I meant it by cultural means. I should have just stated that originally. Now I have to look it up in Zoological means. So, now thanks to you I’ll have a better understanding. :)
I’m convinced that the use of “race” in the context of cultural anthropology is itself a racist system designed to propagate a continuing divide among human beings. Rather than being accurately descriptive it is intentionally divisive. It has no basis in biological fact.
