WASHINGTON (AP) -- Growing up as a black teen, John Harris III says he wasn't always sure about what he wanted to do with his life. But the 23-year-old, now part of the first generation of college students who saw the nation's first black president elected, points to a newfound sense of purpose for him and other black graduates.
A new analysis by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows many in the black and Hispanic communities share Harris' optimism. America's minorities are now far more optimistic about their economic future than whites and by the widest margin since at least 1987.
"We feel more independent," said Harris, a recent graduate of historically black Howard University, who now works to reduce homelessness. "We feel like we're worth more, because we see it every day on the TV, hear it on the radio and are beginning to see it more in our communities."
After years of economic attitudes among whites, blacks and Hispanics following similar patterns, whites' confidence in their economic future has plummeted in the last decade, according to the analysis. Blacks and Hispanics, meanwhile, have sustained high levels of optimism despite being hit hard in the recent recession.
The findings come as President Barack Obama seeks to promote a broader message of economic opportunity amid a rising gap between rich and poor. The AP reported this week that 4 out of 5 U.S. adults have struggled with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least part of their lives, with white pessimism about their economic future at a 25-year high. More than 40 percent of the poor are white.

...well considering “whitey” is who’s making all of the jobs, and “whitey” is who’s paying into the entitlement system they all know and love, one would think that “whitey” would be lauded for his/her strength and work ethic.

The poll results may have less to do with the economy and more to do shifting demographics and perceived shifting power. As minorities see whites’ percentage of the population dwindling they are optimistic that power will shift to the growing percentage of people of color. Whites are pessimistic for the same reason.

It could to an extent be differing perceptions about the same realities - whites are more likely to view an increasing reliance on government handouts and freebies as bad and unsustainable, whereas blacks and Hispanics see it as something free and sustainable. Whites are more likely to fear creeping totalitarianism and a vast expansion of government, blacks and Hispanics to support it.
I think your reasoning is correct; which makes the GOP idea that they can win the majority of Hispanic voters foolhardy.
If all this were happening under Republican present _residents, we would have had three present _residents since 2008.

When I was younger this was an abstract concept; I thought Obama would lose in 2012 because the inflation linked to the national debt came quickly (everybody could see it right away in groceries and gasoline). The media somehow convinced people it wasn’t important, so it apparently played no role in the election.

I can and do. We're talking about people that by and large have little understanding of reality, or even worse, actually believe left wing nonsense, white skin privilege, think it's racism when people just normally prefer people like themselves, etc.
I guess it’s the “white guilt” pounded into me throughout my public schooling. I was bused to a predominantly black high school, had very few black friends, and survived rioting blacks. I’ve also been the victim of two violent assaults at the hands of blacks. You’d think I’d learn.
