New report: Gitmo costs U.S. $2.7 million per prisoner
William Holt 2 hours ago Barack Obama
The United States government spends about $2.7 million per prisoner per year to operate the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, the Washington Post reports.
That estimate comes from a recent study by the Miami Heralds Carol Rosenberg, who has covered Gitmo since 2002. According to Rosenberg, the U.S. will spend $454 million this year to maintain the facility and pay troop salaries, among other fees a little under half a billion dollars.
With only 166 prisoners, that works out to an annual cost of about $2.7 million per detainee. For a point of comparison, California spends an annual $47,000 per prisoner, according to a 2010 study from that states government.
According to the Post, Rosenbergs study serves as a reminder of the tremendous cost and inefficiency of running Gitmo and why the detention facility has been such a thorn in the side of the Obama administration.

Well I’m sure glad Obama shut it down six years ago, like he promised he would....oh, wait...
Letting them starve themselves to death would be cheaper in the long run, and would save on food expenses in the short run.
It’s a jobs program. Keep it going.
Finally a government expenditure that we can support!
I wonder how much of those costs would still be borne with Gitmo as a naval base without the prison?
If Gitmo was not there we would still be paying those troop salaries, as they would be stationed elsewhere, so this is a bit misleading.
They spend that on late-night snacks for Moochelle’s vacations.
Why not just let them dig a tunnel and post US guards at the end. The smartest, most devious ones will make an escape and we can shoot them as they stick out their heads and cull the herd. The dumb, compliant ones who remain behind will cause fewer problems.
The biggest cost is likely our troops...that would be the good guys. No problem here.
Ammo costs $.50 to $1 per round.
Just sayin...
Why do I think there is something phony about this cost stat.
I could take care of them for $.23 each.
A rope would be even cheaper, as you can use it over and over again.
However, it would be more fitting to use a sword to decapitate, honoring the tradition of islam.
I would suggest dipping the blade in hog fat first, for a fast, lubricated cut.
Just saw the post. That was my first thought.
A rope would be a lot cheaper. Ammo prices are coming down (.22LR has been $0.06 a round on ammoseek.com for several days). Those on a hunger strike could be left to their own choices. We have many much less expensive options.
Old saying, first there’s lies, then damn lies, and then statistics..........
.... Wow ... that sounds like quite a bargain compared to the $11.45 million the government spends per green job in the US.
