The way Rand Paul sees it, the 86 senators who opposed his amendment to freeze $1.5 billion in annual aid to Egypt voted "against the rule of law" on Wednesday. Paul's amendment to the transportation spending bill would have halted aid to the country until elections were held and redirected the money to domestic bridge repairs instead.
In Pauls defense, a 2010 law requires halting U.S. aid to any country that undergoes a military coup. The problem, however, is that the U.S. has failed to make the determination that the militarys ousting of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi on July 3 was in fact a military coup.
Why? Because as Paul noted, "Its not convenient now to obey the law that they passed.' Sen. Bob Corker made that pretty clear in earlier reports when he said, "Egypt is a very strategic country in the Middle East and what we need to be is an instrument of calmness...We need to deal with our laws in such a way that allow us to continue to be that instrument of stability in the region."
The top Republican on the committee, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), vowed to take up the legal issues of continued aid to Egypt when Congress returns in September.
Only 12 Republicans supported Pauls amendment.

Why did Ron Paul’s group single out Marco Rubio for voting against Rand Pauls aid bill?

We have no rule of law in America anymore...
Just a minor reality check... Did US aid end when the military coup that ousted Mubarak took place? After all, this is the second coup by the military in three years, and I’m pretty sure, both were well after the enactment date of the cutting off of aid for military coups...
OH! That’s right, the first one was just fine, after all, it ushered in strong repression of women, open murder of gays, murdering of Christians. THIS one is bad, because it ousts members of an Islamic terrorist organization.. (I know, redundant there, the exception is Islamic organization that isn’t a haven for terrorists...)
Exactly. Aid should be cut off to all of them.
No, Rand is just a demagogue.
Which one is Pelosi? All a**holes look the same to me.
Totally unexpected and unprecedented.
Blessed are the peace makers.
Unexpected????
Yeah, isn’t that odd.
Yeah, like the SDS, when it passed the Port Huron Statement calling for unilateral disarmament.
How dare he withhold money to our sworn enemy.
Check that, there is no rule of law for the government or any of the ruling elite, anymore. All 4 billion laws still apply to you, peasant.
I don’t know. If a secular or even remotely secular military boots a raging Islamic zealot out of office and starts killing Muslim radicals who had been slaughtering Christians and raping women left and right, I think I can live with continuing to give them aide. Even military aide, as long as its used to kill more Muslim radicals.
Well there are no good muslims and those so called secular muslims are no different than the so called radicals and will return to killing the infidels as soon as they get their co religionists under control.
Elbaradei was Obama’s first choice after Mubarak and now he’s the second in command. He’s just the happy face painted on the caliphate and just two years ago was promising war with Israel to rally his so called “moderate” supporters.
In 2011, President Obama quickly called on President Mubarak to acquiesce to demonstrators demands and leave office. With Mubarak out of the way, Obama proceeded to support the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, who succeeded in stealing the revolution. Obamas support extended to an ex-con named Muhammad Morsi. By his own admission, Morsi was in prison during the January 25 demonstration. But he was in contact with members of Hamas, who broke into the prison and freed Morsi and other Muslim Brotherhood prisoners. When Morsi ran for the presidency, Obama continued to support him, even when it was clear that the close election was rigged by dubious tactics.
Egypt isn’t our sworn enemy, but nice of you to put that ridiculous fiction in open thread.
After allowing the middle east to be nearly completely destabilized by arbitrarily jumping in and out of conflicts without clear rhyme or reason (remember how he steered clear of the Iranian revolt), obama has set the stage for Biblically predicted alliances to proceed.
If one is not led by God, then one is the agent of the devil.
God allows this, but will require that believers faith be tested.
We in the US ain’t seen nuthin yet. The Coptic Christians, the Maronites, etc. are ready for the Rapture.
Americans are still enjoying their AC and cable...
Why oppose aid to Egypt now when it finally seems to be in the process of kicking out the Islamists? I would have thought most conservatives would have approved of this.
