Maya Shankar is a senior policy advisor at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy. Her mandate is to supervise the organization of a federal government 'nudge squad' that will subtly change the behaviors of bureaucrats -- and the rest of us.
When does a nudge become a shove?
Americans may find out, as the federal government is setting up a 'behavioral insights team' to tinker with the way we accomplish everything from saving money and staying in school to losing weight and becoming more energy-efficient.
The Obama administration's grand plans for behavioral science....
Cass Sunstein, formerly the Director of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, is regarded as the godfather of modern government paternalism
In the UK, a series of bulletins sketch out how broad the approaches have become. They have tackled wasting food, cheating on exams, job-seeking schedules, skimping on charitable giving, drinking milk, morning commutes, choosing sources of energy and sticking to New Year's resolution.
'We are already working with over a dozen federal departments and agencies on newly-designed behavioral insight: the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Veterans Administration, Treasury, Social Security Administration, Housing and Urban Development, and the United States Department of Agriculture.'
[All] may not bode well, given that the NYC ban on large-size fizzy drinks has officially fallen flat.
An appeals court ruled Tuesday that the city's Board of Health didn't have the constitutional authority to limit how much soda can go into a restaurant's cup.
The ruling will set a precedent that opens up such government interventions to [challenges] when bureaucracies try to tweak what ordinary people do, and how they do it.

Her arms aren't toned enough -- clearly needs more time in the gym. Her earrings are too long and her choice of clothes is atrocious. He hair is too kinky and long. Her lips need thinning. Too much of her gums are showing. Her eyebrows are too bushy. She probably needs a depilatory.
"Nudge" works both ways, darling. We know what's best for you, now pay attention and start improving yourself.
Anteater, not aardvark.
So, she’s the first Czar of the ReEducation Camps?
I wonder if she’s playing the part of “Monica” in the Barack Obama movie.
I’ll consider myself zotted.

Just another czar and fetters of Obama's.
Sunstein, et al called it libertarian paternalism. We little people are free to choose from among the options presented to us by government employees.

Well, we know who she’s NOT sleeping with. Barry O.
This sounds EXACTLY like something Moochelle had her hands in...while spreading the “stimulus” funds around. It was called some stupid name—can’t remember....But it was to start in Las Vegas and hypnotize teenagers not to smoke...all just a bunch of crap. Our country is swirling the drain.
No, silly. That part was filled years ago by Reggie Love.
Maybe she Huma and Hill’s new toy. Ewwwwwwwwwww.
fu mara. rot in hell. nudge nudge.
Very true.
OH, BTW, her name is Maya (not Mara). The name under her picture is my typo.
My typo.
I hate it but I don’t know how to fix it.
Our nation, culture and society are in their death throes. It is over. Many people are just now waking up and demand that we fight back. They waited too long to waken. The fight is over and we lost it. There is nothing left of things but to wait for the end, for complete socialist oppression.
It is very painful when you finally realize this is true.
