Working late in Newark NJ one night in the early 70s, I left the fed building to get to my auto in an adjacient lot when I spotted this guy who changed course to head right for me approaching from my right side. I waited for him to get in my security zone, about 20 feet, pulled my gun, pointed it and motioned for him to walk across in front of and away from my path. I had no compunction about pulling the trigger on that scumbag because I knew he figured he was going to roll me. He disappered around the corner, away from the way he was going, before I moved forward.

This is what one must be aware of enough to do now. Whether it would have been legal if I blasted him I feel I’d rather be tried by 12 then carried by six.

I’ve used a firearm to protect myself twice in my life. It’s not something I ever want to do again, but I carry a gun with me everywhere I go.

I don’t care if I’m going to mother’s house to fix her computer, I’m carrying.

This is a terrifying world in which we live. Carrying a gun is just another tool on my belt and is the cost of liberty, I believe.

“in my security zone” - is that a legal term?

Can you actually legally draw down on someone you perceive as a threat if they are in your “security zone”?

I’m not trying to be combative. Just thinking that you could face charges for doing this. Yes, I know, judged by 12 > carried by 6.

"Should have had a gun. Even if it against the law in DC. Carry a revolver. SSS."

Odds are I'd end up in jail before Mr. Branch.

I telecommute out of DC and physically worked there during the Reagan administration. I would never consider living there, or walk around in DC after the bars close. It's a war, and you are truly behind enemy lines in DC.

They really should hang Mr. Branch from a tree branch, but he'll be out in no time.

Their gun laws didn’t seem to deter the perp who waylaid a friend of my Father at his front door there [DC] back in the 90’s. He didn’t have much, and the guy told him to open the door and go inside. He refused, said he would have his wife slide money through the mail slot but he’d have to shoot him before he let him inside.

She slid money through the slot, guy looked at him and said he’d have shot him if they didn’t have money in the house as he walked off...

I wouldn’t go that far,

but I will say that it is going to take several left leaning folks getting attacked by thugs in order for there to be any significant change to laws regarding this behavior.

Before the head trauma, he was an aggressive, career-driven Washington operative, who had risen to associate director for environmental policy at IHS, a major consulting firm...

Personally, I grieve for him and his family and the tough times to come, and pray for his recovery. But in practical terms, he was in the enemy camp of the enviros.

Either that or Martin would have done what he wanted to do and killed Zimmerman. When GZ exterminated Martin he did a large social service, prevented many crimes, and saved the lives of a number of unknown people whom Martin wold have murdered before finally meeting a violent end himself. Pardon me, I just can’t view the justified killing of a wannabe murderer as a “tragedy.”

It took me a bit of effort to find out. I had to click the link to the Post article about the rehab process and then the link in that article to the article about the original crime. Looks like they were doing their best to hide the perp's race. Duh!! Wonder why.

Hell, what you did was ILLEGAL! They call it "brandishing" and it's a felony. And the 12 would be his homies who were not smart enough to get out of jury duty!

24 years for this?

Not long enough.  The victim will never be "right" again.  This should be a "life sentence" infraction.

I suggest the perp's first parole hearing, be scheduled right after the victim gets his parole from this damage.  That's right class.  Never!
