Fresh off his talking tour of Iowa and the Midwest, Sen. Ted Cruz soaked up the spotlight in Denver this weekend and took the No. 1 spot in one of the straw polls of the 2014 election season.
The junior senator from Texas earned multiple standing ovations at the Western Conservative Summit on Saturday when he called for the end of the embattled Internal Revenue Service and urged lawmakers to defund Obamacare.
He revealed a Senate Republican campaign against the Obama administrations health care overhaul, called Dont Fund It, which he launched with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. Cruz has fiercely opposed Obamacare since he entered office seven months ago, and is one of the leading lawmakers trying to block its implementation next year.
The Tea Party duo launched a website that targets Republican senators who have not pledged to oppose 2014 funding Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Richard Burr of South Carolina, and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
A poll taken during the three-day summit showed the Texas senator far ahead of other potential 2016 candidates. Forty-five percent of attendees chose Cruz, compared to the events keynote speaker, Gov. Scott Walker, who came in second place with 13 percent.
During the 2011 summits poll before the 2012 election, restaurant executive Herman Cain took the lead.
Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee also spoke this weekend in Denver, along with former Rep. Allen West, who closed out the conference.
Cruz has repeatedly denied a presidential bid, even after traveling to Iowa, one of the first states to hold a primary in 2014 with another possible contender, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
At this point, 100 percent of my focus is on the U.S. Senate. And the reason is simple: The Senates the battlefield. The Senate is where these fights are being fought, Cruz told reporters after the event. So Im devoting my time, No. 1, to trying to stand up for free-market principles and the Constitution.
Cruz, Paul and Lee will also speak at a sold-out event Wednesday hosted by the Young Americans for Liberty organization.
If he had dual citizenship he is ineligible.
Except for the anything goes crowd. But then, those people with vote for a Romney.
I will pass. He is better where he is.
Scott Walker has twenty times the accomplishments and has proven he holds up under fire.
No need to be an ass.
I’ve seen lots of theories but nothing concrete which is why I posted that. I’m sure (other) FReepers will kindly enlighten me.
Thanks. But a further question ... when the question of Obama’s citizenship came up, one slant was that his father wasn’t an American. How is that different from this case or is that not even a problem?
Thanks. Good link.
That would be a powerful team!
That would be a powerful team!
If Obama was born inside the US then he is a natural born citizen. If Obama was born in Kenya the we have to look at the laws and circumstances of his birth. If his mother met the requirements under the law, then he would be a natural born citizen. If she did not meet the requirements, then he would not be a natural born citizen.
Straw polls a year before mid terms are worth even less than the number of delegate seats they give.
Supposedly Obama was born in Hawaii, a US state, whereas Cruz was born in Canada,
a distinct Nation. Both born to mothers with US citizenship.
The birth and NBC will be argued but the true definitive answer if it ever
comes will be from the nine robed Justices at the US Supreme Court.
It does make for interesting discussion amongst the troops.
So as long as one parent is a citizen, that’s enough?
They're just getting an early start so that the media can begin digging up dirt on him. /s
Like Wiener’s and Huma’s child can be eligible. I don’t believe the Founders would have thoght such.
Forty-five percent of attendees chose Cruz, compared to the events keynote speaker, Gov. Scott Walker, who came in second place with 13 percent.Cruz-Walker 2016?
You are right. At birth he had Cuban citizenship via his father.
Considering Cruz is one of the brightest legal minds in the country today, whatever conclusion he comes up about his eligibilty is probably right.
Kind of like Bill Clinton. I understand his father was part Arapahoe. On the other hand is wife is Justahoe.
Ditto. It's starting to look as if Cruz will be the last conservative republican standing.
Tritto. Cruz is the most well spoken, sharp witted republican since the Gipper himself.
