William W. Scranton, the moderate Republican governor of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1967, who lost a run for his party’s presidential nomination in 1964 and later served as the United States representative to the United Nations, died on Sunday in Montecito, Calif. He was 96.

We are saddled with the Bob Casey dynasty largely because the current Dim Senator’s father cleaned the clock of Scranton’s son in a series of James Carville TV ads pointing out Scranton Jr.’s hippie counter-culture past.
of course to us, after a few years of living under Uncle Miltie Shapp as Governor, Scranton really DID start to look like Goldwater in hindsight.
Scranton was one in a long line of liberal Republican governors in this state. One of many reasons why Pennsylvania is still in the Dark Ages.
The death of somebody like Scranton should make us all remember how long this battle between the moderate-liberal and conservative wings of the republican party has been going on.
The battles between Bob Taft and Tom Dewey, between Goldwater and Rockefeller and Scranton, between Ford and Reagan, between Reagan and the Bush’s, Crist and Rubio, Dewhurst and Cruz, Murkowski and Miller, Specter and Toomey, and on and on.
The Goldwater folks siezed the republican party from the me-too Thomas Dewey, Nelson Rockefeller moderates, and they have hated the conservatives since. They hated Reagan but could not stop him because the people were with him and gave him two massive landslides and a third to his heir-apparent, George Bush Sr.
Then the republican establishment made damn sure that nobody as conservative as Goldwater or Reagan ever received the nomination again. And we’ve had losers or bare winners since. Bush Sr., Dole, Bush Jr., McCain and Romney. They have carefully, willfully and intentionally destroyed and demoralized any conservative that rises or may rise.
I thought the old RINO had passed years ago.
Did Scranton’s ancestors found Scranton, PA? That would be kind of cool. Maybe my state could do that....

Who? Alan Keyes, Steve Forbes, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Bob Dornan, Bob Smith, Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan, Gary Bauer, Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachman, Rick Perry, Morrie Taylor? Some of those candidates may have been good but none of them was electable.
What happens to rising conservatives? Either they don't rise very far or they rise so far they get condemned as RINOs. That happened to Goldwater himself.
