That route with all those cross streets lights would take forever (not to mention the crap-hole neighborhoods.) Your top speed would be no more than 35-40 the entire way and average far less with all the stop lights. I know. I grew up in LA and I worked in that Melrose area for years.

I'm also a native Angeleno. I drove professionally in the city for years and years. Unless you'd done it hundreds of times (like I have), you'd be surprised at how fast the surface street route to LAX is, compared to going around the long way on the freeways.

The only time we drivers would take the 110 or the 405 to LAX, was when we were starting out in Beverly Hills or Downtown. If we were anywhere near Hollywood or Mid-Wilshire, we'd take Highland, etc. to the airport.

It's entirely plausible to me that Hastings was taking the surface street route to LAX. I can't see any reason why he wouldn't, if he knew his way around.
