The Lincoln Memorial was shut down Friday morning after vandals splashed the statue of the nation’s 16th president and the marble floor around it with green paint, U.S. Park Police said.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the popular tourist attraction on the west end of the Mall, but so far they have released no information about who may have been responsible.
Authorities believe the vandalism happened around 1:30 a.m. The National Park Service will work to clean up the paint, police said, and the memorial will be closed to the public until cleanup is complete.
Police said no words or symbols had been painted or written on the memorial, only splatters of green paint. No damage was reported at the Mall’s other memorials and monuments.

On a not unrelated note, we are less than 1 month away from the 50th anniversary of MLKJr's 8/23/1963 "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom" speech. Anyone heard anything about festivities being planned for this day? With all the smoke and fumes in the aftermath of the George Zimmerman trial, I would expect Al Sharpton's NAN to be on top of this.
We in the bedroom communities of Birmingham, AL, have been pummeled by our local fish-wrapper, The Birmingham News, all year about this being the 50th anniversary of the birth of the civil rights movement. For all its bragging about civil rights advancements, Birmingham is losing population due to the usual laundry list of social ills reflected in a minority-majority population.
That was the first thought that came to my mind.
They were probably trying to write “Lincoln was a Democrat” like they were taught in public schools, but because they were taught in public schools they don’t know how to write.
Hmmmm. What political system masquerading as a religion of peace (TM) uses green as its colour?
Probably some Greenies complaining about the lack of Civil War battlefield detoxification.

It’s open at night. Park Rangers are only on duty from 9:30am - 11:30 pm.
It’s particularly beautiful at night....and quite crowded with visitors.
My favorite is the Jefferson Memorial at night during cherry blossom season.
No matter how late I went, I was never the only person there, so this must have happened WAY late/early or the vandals were sneaky and bold.
It looks like it was applied from a squeeze bottle or squirt gun.
Who does something like this? and I can’t imagine they could get away with being unseen by someone in the late-night crowds, as you mention.
It's nearly always crowded there late at night... I'm not sure what it is that makes so many people visit at night.
It must be hard to have a father on that wall, and perhaps the pain is more difficult at night.

Partly boredom; if you’re there for a few days, and stuck in your hotel room, there’s not much to do at night; plus, the tourist thinks they are *beating-the-crowds* by a evening visit.
The type of person who did this is someone who wouldn’t mind burning an American flag, throw litter on the ground, or sympathizing with the *occupy-crowd*. Pox on them!
