A passenger train derailed in Spain yesterday, killing at least 77 people trapped inside the crushed cars and injuring 143.
There were Americans among the dead, according to television reports.
The tragic high-speed derailment, along a curving stretch of track in the northwestern part of the country, was Spains worst rail accident in decades, officials said.
Bodies were covered by blankets along the tracks as rescuers used pickaxes to pry open the cars and free people inside the train cars.

Wow.... The term watching a train wreck in slow motion is kind of myth in this case. That happened fast and violently. Surprised anyone survived this.
I am very sorry to hear of the train wreck in Spain. But, there’s this other train wreck that has been going on for years in Washington DC.
Thousands killed and trillions of dollars in damages.
I wonder if the throttle was stuck?
Another story had the train going double the speed limit on that section of track.
It looks like a car behind the front (engine) car left the tracks and pulled the front car over on its side.
And to think, folks like the Left and Willie Green demand we get high-speed rail here in the US...
Looks like a small explosion behind the main locomotive as it was jumping the track at speed.
Looks like the electric arc from over head shorting out.
Good observation...it looks like you have a high speed train going too fast on a track/right of way...that wasn’t originally built for that speed. The track should be banked...
Or the train should have obeyed the speed limit. They had probably been told to go that speed and made it through there hundreds of times safely.
I hope they get the bugs out of these high speed trains before they start transporting us to the FEMA camps,
Watch the video looking at that second or third car. Before things start to come off the track you can see that car rising up and the electrical spark just before it started off the track. The front car sure looked to be doing OK until things behind happened.
Either something malfunctioned or someone bombed that particular car. Does not look to be jumping the track because of speed. My bet is bombing.
“El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.
Trapped in his wrecked cab, he reportedly told supervisors over the radio: “We’re human! We’re human,” according to El Pais. “I hope there are no fatalities because they will fall on my conscience,” he said, according to the newspapers source. NBC News was unable to immediately confirm the report.”
How awful. It looks like the passenger car jumped first..pulling everything else. Prayers for the souls on board.
I think the electrical discharge was caused by the second (or third?) car hitting the tower holding up the wires, just after the car jumped off the tracks. The train took out several more of the towers before it hit the camera.
You can see the wires in the foreground start to jump around well before the train arrives.
The train was moving over 100mph.
The engine took a curve and slowed down while the cars behind it kept traveling at the same speed due to their momentum.
Those passenger cars are lighter than the engine, so as they pushed behind the slower engine the chain snapped, and not surprisingly one of the lighter passenger cars hopped the track before the engine did.
Horses, not zebras.
A perfectly times explosion in the passenger car. So by all means, let’s talk about anything but terrorism.
Just like my toy trains did when I made them take a curve too quickly.
And what about the obvious explosion in the passenger car?
Get a grip.
