With 100% of precincts reporting, the Hanford-area grower holds a nearly 6,000 vote lead over Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez in the contentious 16th State Senate race, 23 ABC News in Bakersfield just reported.
The California Secretary of State is reporting Vidak has 54 percent of the vote, with a total of 39,085 votes. Perez has 46 percent of the vote, with a total of 33,252 votes.
Kern County and Fresno County were where the majority of the provisional ballots appeared in the special election. In yesterdays election, Kern County reported 48.1 percent for Vidak, and 58.9 percent for Perez. Fresno reported 45.9 percent for Vidak to 54.1 percent for Perez. However, Vidak won King and Tulare Counties with large margins.

This is big, as Vidak replaces a Democrat and the district voted for Obama by a solid margin last year. Vidak is a cherry orchard owner and the grandson of immigrants from Serbia. Hopefully, he’ll continue to win elections.
” Kern County reported 48.1 percent for Vidak, and 58.9 percent for Perez.”
I’m no math major...but...
Although I can deduct the parties these two represent, how about letting us non Cali folks know who is who.
“Kern County reported 48.1 percent for Vidak, and 58.9 percent for Perez”
107% total votes, democrat leading, what a surprise.
Congrats, Vidak! :)
However, Vidak won King and Tulare Counties with large margins.
Add 58.9 and 48.1 and tell me what you come up with...
;-)
Let me get this straight. He’s a white Serbian? Who’d have known with a name like his.
Pretty soon, everyone will be white.
Vidak Republican, Perez Democrat
Thanks!
Many things are possible in a DemocRat precinct.
Called “New Math” in Common Core .... everything is relative.
The election was for an unexpired term that ends in 2015, so it used the old lines for SD-16 (the ones used in 2010, when Democrat Michael Rubio won). Under those lines, it is 63.2% Hispanic, 6.5% black, and 22.3% white Anglo, and its voter registration is 50.6% Democrat and 31.5% Republican: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_16th_State_Senate_district
In 2014, Vidak probably will run in the new SD-14, which is the most similar new district to the old SD-16 where he won yesterday. The new SD-14 has an even higher Hispanic majority—71.2%—and its white Anglo percentage is down to 17.9%, although the black percentage also dropped to 4.8%. But the district has more registered independents in than the old SD-16, with both registered Democrats and Republicans decreasing (to 48.4% and 30.6%, respectively): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_14th_State_Senate_district
So if Vidak runs for reelection in the new SD-14, his odds of winning would be no lower than if such race was held under tge lines of the old SD-16.
He really should substitute that K for an L .... : )
youse got me confused. 4 year term ... are the terms staggered ... half of senate elected in ‘10 and half in ‘12? If so, then some people are not represented currently, correct? if they were removed from the ‘12 seats and haven’t had a shot yet to vote in the ‘14 seats? Or are all Senate seats 4 years?
Staggered terms, all 4 years. Same thing happens in WI. Yes, it leaves some people unrepresented for 2 years; I’m surprised such systems haven’t been struck down on one-man, one-vote grounds yet, forcing such states to elect half the members to two-year terms in the first election after each redistricting (which I believe is how IL does it).
Yeah all our seats are up every redistricting year, they stagger when each seat gets the 2 year term. I believe one third each (not quite since 59 is not divisible by 3) is 4 4 2, 2 4 4 and 4 2 4.
We won a paltry 19 seats last year. Less than 2/3s, but that doesn’t matter since a supermajority in IL is just 3/5s. Even with the rat map and Osama landslide in the state we should have done better than 19.
The Cali/WI way of doing it seems blatantly unconstitutional to me. But I guess no one’s ever sued over it? Someone should. How many states do it like that?
Anyway great news about Vidak, though I notice the rat hasn’t conceded despite the margin. If 54% isn’t safe, boy.
cannot work well. What if a guy gets elected in ‘10 and then is redistricted out of his district into a neighboring district that runs in ‘12?
He can run in ‘12 and if he wins he resigns his original seat?
The legislature knows which Senators have their terms expiring at the end of ‘12, but which of the districts need to run in ‘12 and which in ‘14, since the new map may look little like the old map?
