Houston woman says she killed man in self-defense

A south Houston woman said she was only protecting herself when she fatally shot a man at a service station.

"I didn't intend to hurt or harm anyone. I just went to the gas station to get gas," Shanequia McDonald said on Tuesday.

McDonald told Houston police she shot Lewis Daniel shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday at a Gulf station in the 6800 block of Cullen, between Griggs and the South Loop. The case will go to the Harris County grand jury to decide if any charges will be filed.

On Tuesday, McDonald was at the side of community activist Quanell X.

"She tried to walk away. What else was she supposed to do?" Quanell asked.

McDonald said she was pumping gas when Daniel, 58, approached her and began making sexual overtures.

"He's from around this area but personally, no, I don't know him," she said Tuesday.

She appeared to shoot him in the foot with her first round, then missed trying to shoot him in the foot again. It looks like he tried to hit her, after she shot him in the foot. I don’t know what was said, to get her to think the guy was a threat after the first shot to the foot. He and she seemed to be backing away from each other, after the second shot and after he tried to hit her. I can’t see how further shots are necessary, seeing as how the guy was retreating. It’d be better to have a full video of the entire confrontation, particularly after the second shot, but both people retreated out of camera sight, so its hard to make a determination. I think she has opened herself up for a manslaughter conviction, maybe involuntary, maybe voluntary. I’ll bet she gets charged because the guy was retreating when she fired the fatal shots. He was no longer a threat to her, and she continued to fire. The fact that she left the scene, afterwards, is also a problem for her.

I’m not sure which hand the knife was in, so you may be right there. I don’t have a problem with arming yourself if you’re truly in fear for your life. I just don’t think you nonchalantly turn your back on a guy for about five seconds while you open your trunk and pull out a rifle, if you are in real fear for your life.

Opening your door and getting in wouldn’t take any longer. Then leave...

If you don’t think you were in the wrong, tell the whole truth. Don’t tell me you shot into the pavement and it bounced up and hit the guy, when you fired four shots point blank into him.

I’m not a police investigator. If I am, I catch you lying and it tells me you think you did something you need to cover up. Who am I to disagree?

Technically, I agree.

I don’t necessarily agree that she shouldn’t drive away, but I fully understand the validity of the argument.

If she is still in fear, I can justify her leaving, going home, and immediately calling the police to report the incident. At that point she has made it clear she wasn’t trying to flee responsibility or prosecution.

You really do need to tell the truth though. Start embellishing or flat out lying, that is not going to help your case at all.

I would like to have seen her fire on him when he first went in for the hit. Once he backed off, it seemed she might have been less justified in shooting the guy. If he moves in again, then shoot.

Don’t shoot the ground. Shoot him on justifiable grounds. Explain exactly what you did and why.

Instead, she pops the trunk and takes out a gun.

It’s my understanding that Georges gun jammed.

I did not hear that evidence come out in court.

“It’s my understanding that Georges gun jammed.”

Many speculated on that from early inconsistent reporting.

Evidence at the trial showed that it functioned as designed. An officer took a loaded cartridge from the chamber when he collected the gun for evidence from the scene.

Liberalism and their ability to grow government is a triumph of emotion over common sense. The media and paid advertisers contribute to that effort.

I've worn out both keyboards and cell phones trying to show conservative groups the wisdom of doing the same - they are not interested. The people trying to get our money only want to use it to maintain the status quo in the beltway.

It's a tad cheaper than Amazon on his own site

He live blogged the Zim trial which I found very informative, in fact they've just posted a piece about this Houston case.

The Fiat TV ad where a woman slaps a man across the face has been discussed. Today, saw a KFC TV ad where a woman slaps a man across the face after she took a bite of the new boneless chicken. The slogan had something to do with: this is so hot it is like a slap to the face.

Why is it only white males who are treated this way in ads? We shouldn't allow it.

It also makes women appear irrational and overly emotional. Not able to control themselves.
