In an almost palpable irony, Russian and U.S. officials simultaneously announced their intent to move forward with controversial arms transfers to opposing sides in the Syrian civil war Monday.

Ok, so basically the emerging situation amounts to a circular firing squad, right? One with heavy weaponry.

So long as it’s contained (yeah, big “if” right there, I know), I really don’t see the downside to this ...

As long as they are killing each other and not us, let Allah sort it out!

It is impossible for weapons to fall into the wrong hands.

I’ve been down this road before but many younger people may not recognize the scenery. The Cold War puppet-masters are at work again. What the hell is America’s vital interest in Syria? I feel sorry for the victims of that conflict but it’s not our job to save the world.

If the syrians kill enough of each other the Pali’s can have a new homeland.

Well much as I like the idea of maximizing casualties in Syria, can’t we just support the Russians? After all, they actually have a dog in this fight...

Might as well. It's not like obama can stand up to Putin.

I think we might reach a tacit understanding with Russia that the weapons supplied to either side not significantly escalate the conflict, that if one side imbalances the equation, the other side will counter it. Always with Israel as the wild card, to carry out unilateral action if it feels threatened.

A mystery at this point is why the northern Syrian Kurds have just gone into an isolationist mode, without using the opportunity to increase ties with the Iraqi Kurds. Hopefully they have been, discreetly.

If Syria does implode, the Kurds have a possibly unique opportunity to jump ship, with the Iraqi Kurd Peshmurga army large enough to guarantee their departure.

I sure the heck don't know why we are supporting the Al Queda side. This Administration is twisted. Assad might be a cretin, but he is better than the alternative (as was Qaddafi, and Mubarak)...

Good question. I suspect they would, because for all their animosity with the radical Kurds, Kurdistan is Turkey’s largest non-European trading partner.

They might demand a price from the Kurds, but it might not be intolerable.

I don't know ... what are the chances that we can set up Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, the Syrians, etc to kill each other in large numbers?
