Ridiculous. The term “Mac” (or diminutive “Mc”) means “Son” in English. Should the entire McDonald clan now turn around and sue Ray Kroc’s company, whose name he bought from two members of that clan?

But in his decision this month, Justice Roger Hughes found Mr. Cheahs true motivations in seeking to register the name was to seek business opportunities with McDonalds. The judge referred to a 2008 letter to McDonalds in which Mr. Cheah suggested
we can together perhaps explore the possibilities of a global MACDIMSUM partnership.
How did that work out for you, Mr. Cheah?

Helps to read the article. Old complaint, I know, and all too often ignored.

Did you ever get upset when Steve Jobs and Apple bullied the hell out of people over names? A trade mark is only as good as it’s defense. Look at what happened to Xerox.

Look... me and the McDonald’s people got this little misunderstanding. See, they’re McDonald’s... I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.

Sure did. Sad to report that Jobs came to a sticky end; cannot say for sure whether it was retribution from on high for said behavior on his part.

Here in Russia, they sell something called “MacCoffee,” which is an instant 3-1 coffee (coffee, sugar and powdered milk). The product is from Indonesia. I've often wondered how they got away with the name. I always figured that McDonalds would have sued them.
