Rand Paul mocks Liz Cheney’s Senate bid ("I thought she was running in her home state of Virginia,”)

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul mocked Liz Cheney’s newly announced Senate campaign Tuesday, questioning her Wyoming residency in a barbed statement.

“When I heard Liz Cheney was running for Senate I wondered if she was running in her home state of Virginia,” Paul said.

Cheney declared this afternoon that she would run in Wyoming’s GOP primary against incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi.

Asked last week about the brewing matchup, Paul told POLITICO he viewed Enzi as a solid conservative.

Paul and Cheney stand at opposite poles of the conservative national security debate, with Cheney supporting a hawkish foreign policy and Paul openly questioning the value of American military action overseas, and advocating for cuts to the defense budget.

Rand made a cutting, sarcastic remark about the possibility Ted Cruz might run for P.

Now he does same about the prospective primary challenge in a Senate race in which he isn’t even involved?

What gives?

Hey, if lifelong Arkansas resident Hillary can carpetbag to New York, I think Liz deserves some slack.

He has a valid point. Liz Cheney lives in VA and has lived here for quite some time. Why is she going to WY to challenge a perfectly good, conservative senator when there are 2 liberal Dems who should be challenged where she lives now?

Because if she follows the Rubio model of "Tea Party Vs. Old Guard" and gains a seat in a conservative state she can stay in Virginia/DC 360 days of the year and still run unopposed for the next 5 terms. In VA she'd have a fight on her hands every election.

She might be in Virginia, but her heart is in Wyoming. Enzi has been a disappointment. Liz would be great for Wyoming and the Senate.

Perhaps there is something she sees that could be done further in a western, rural state that Enzi is not doing.

VA is a whole nuther ballgame.

Name recognition in Wyoming. She could carry 20% on her name in Virginia with all the gubment employees that live there.

BTW - why is Terrible Terry McCauliffe running in VA and not in his home state of NY?

I remember when he was taking the Clintons on a tour of CNY to show them is home turf.

Yea, the cowardly out. Actually, I like Liz Cheney. She could handle either Warner or Eyebrows. But I AM getting mighty sick of these political dynasties, whether D or R.

This seems to happen to them all. They meet and work with someone, so they want to help them stay in the Senate.

The Senate should not be choosing its own members. And senators should not be picking and choosing who they would like to work with. The people of Wyoming should decide who they want to be a senator.

Newsflash Rand, once your new buddy McConnell is safely reelected, he will move heaven and earth to get rid of YOU! He will not be saying “I’ve got Rand’s back!” Don’t believe me? Just look to Pennsylvania. Arlen Specter sidled up to Rick Santoum to get his endorsement and Specter was reelected. Two years later, Specter didn’t lift a finger to help Santorum get reelected. Because Santorum was a conservative and needed to be removed. He was used and then betrayed.

The people of Wyoming should listen to their own council, not Rand Paul.

Trying to keep the field clear for himself? But if that’s it, he’s a real rookie at it, needs to study the Romney method a bit. He’s leaving too many fingerprints.

BTW, I don’t get the problem with Cheney’s residency. Dick Cheney & family, I thought, had deep roots in WY. I lived there for a while, and folks there seemed rather proud of the Cheney connection.

As for Enzi, he’s being accused of being lazy, but that’s just par for the course with typical WY pols. It’s built into the system out there. State legislature only meets like half a year, maybe less, and the rest of the time they haves real jobs or other non-governmental ways of spending their time. The US Congress should take a cue and get a life outside of DC.

Reasons to repeal the 17th Amendment.

Because he's lived in Virginia most of his adult life. Why isn't Liz Cheney running in Virginia.

I’m not addressing his disagreement with her decision.

I just don’t understand a pattern of making sarcastic, cutting remarks about somebody, in public, when it is only knocking down the person you make it about, who is a fellow GOP conservative, of which there are so few that are genuine. And each time it revolved around the possibility, or the probability, they might run for a higher office, or run for office in the first place.

I would stay out of this one - why is it Rand Paul’s calling to make cutting remarks about it? Let her try to make her case and let the chips fall. The WY voters will decide. Or the activists or the money people, whomever.

In Ted Cruz’s case, that made Rand Paul look SMALL. Because to cut down his fellow conservative star like that, even before Cruz actually took steps towards running, just made him look like he can’t stand even the talk, or rumor, that somebody besides himself might run who is also a star.

Again, I’m not addressing her decision or reasoning behind it. I’m not talking about her so much as wondering about his pattern of sarcastic, cutting remarks at the slightest hint somebody might run for something he doesn’t want them to run for.

You are certainly entitled to your POV here on FR concerning her possible run.

Yeah. And Hillary's heart belonged to New York; that's why she ran for the Senate seat there. Puleeze.

Liz and her husband bought a home in WY over a year ago. And Enzi is hardly “perfect,” having voted to tax the internet.

What gives?

Dick Cheney backed Trey Grayson against Rand Paul.

Look for Rick Perry to support Enzi too, as Dick Cheney backed Kay Barely Republican against him.
