Florida US Rep. Corrine Brown condemns Zimmerman verdict

ORLANDO -- More than 400,000 people have signed online petitions calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman for killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The department is looking into whether those charges need to be filed. Both NAACP President Ben Jealous and NAACP Chairman Roslyn Brock are speaking out in support of the continued federal investigating Zimmerman for violating Martin’s civil rights.

Meanwhile, News 13 discussed the case with Florida Fifth District Congressman Corrine Brown at the 104th annual NAACP convention Sunday, which is being held this week at the Orange County Convention Center.

Brown, D-Jacksonville, who represents parts of Central Florida, joined NAACP leaders in condemning Zimmerman’s not guilty verdict.

The congresswoman said she has done so in the past and will continue pushing the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate whether Martin’s civil rights were violated.

She said she also supports filing federal charges against Zimmerman if investigators decide they have probable cause.

“If they find that his rights have been violated, yes I do but I know his rights had been violated because he’s not here with us. He’s not with us, and he did not have a weapon. I’m OK in letting the criminal justice system take care of itself but the point of the matter is, it’s not working,” explained Congresswoman Corrine Brown.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Corrine Brown released the following statement, following Saturday’s verdict:

"I am heartbroken and angered by the verdict in this decision. My prayers go out to the Martin family in their grief, as they are faced to live with a justice system that has failed them, a system that did not exact even minimal punishment on the man who killed their 17 year old son.

"This is a blatant example of our justice system being entirely broken. Along with the NAACP and other civil rights groups, I pledge to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws here in Florida and across the nation, and do everything within my power as a Member of Congress to put an end to racial profiling. Last year, an innocent young man was killed in Sanford, Florida while returning from a 7-11 grocery store, and the perpetrator was not even convicted of a crime...clearly, there is something very wrong with a system of justice that legally sanctions such a heinous act.

"Two cases involving Stand Your Ground laws in my congressional district highlight the hypocrisy and disparities in this law's interpretation. In this case, in Sanford, a white man shot a black teenager, Trayvon Martin, and the justice system ruled it was an act of self-defense under Stand Your Ground. In Jacksonville, Marissa Alexander, a young black mother fired a warning shot because she feared another possible attack by her abusive husband, yet she was not allowed a stand your ground defense during her trial. If ever there were a case where Stand Your Ground should apply, it would have been that of Marissa Alexander."

You would think there would have been more attention paid to the black guy who was running for mayor of some small town in Mississippi, who was found murdered. Another black man was found shortly after driving his car. The man confessed to the murder. The black guy running for mayor was known to be gay, so the guy who killed him claimed that he made a pass at him and he killed him in self-defense. But you know that that scenario would never pass muster as a great cause for the black community to get behind.

And get this-even after the guy driving the murdered man's car confessed, the media still tried to spin it, using subtle wording, as yet another racist white "Mississippi Burning" incident.

Well what you said is true...but I live in Duval county and so I am stuck with Corey as the prosecutor..and because of a gerrymandered district for corrine brown...she has a tiny strip of land bout a mile wide from Duval county urban core of Jacksonville down to Orange County, Orlando.
Since I be a cracker can i sue them both for infringing on my civi rights? I mean Fair is fair!

She’s not pandering to them: she’s stirring them up.

Why else to throw out the blatant lie that Zimmerman was acquitted under Stand Your Ground?

Trayvon acted like a punk because he was a punk. He caused his own death by remaining in a place and acting suspicious. If he went home he would be alive today. He attacked Zimmerman thinking he would be a punk hero in his black community. Guess what!

Hal, I take offense to your post. Have you ever took the time to look at her congressional district? It looks like an upside down horse shoe, it was gerrymandered to hit a bunch of predominately black areas, that keep electing this communist to office. Please think and do some research before you start implying that we are idiots just for living in a state. My Friend

She got up and started railing agaings’t the GOP on the floor of the House for splitting the food stamps off from the Farm Bill. My rep Rob Woodall told her to STFU and The speaker told her to go sit down but the dems made such a stink out of it that Rob withdrew his objection and they let her rant for 40 more seconds. It never changes.

IOW, she's in favor of amending the law so that it only applies to black shooters. Racist Demagogic Party ping.
