Fugitive document-leaker Edward Snowden announced Friday that he is submitting a request for political asylum in Russia, where he has been stranded at Moscows Sheremetyevo Airport since June 23.
Eventually, the 30-year-old former contractor for the National Security Agency said in a meeting with human rights activists and lawyers, he still hopes to be granted asylum in Latin America.

I haven’t seen any evidence, in any of his statements or actions, that suggest that he is looking for fame or fortune. He sounded sober and resigned to his semi-doomed fate. He had a pretty cushy, comfortable life in Hawaii with a great job, and a slutty GF. It really appears that he is one of a handful of gov agents that have acted on principle.
At the end of the day, most Americans believe that these dragnet monitoring programs, focused on citizens, are wrong.
Putin’s condition that he quit leaking stuff on the admin... could mean let US do the leaking, privately, to each of the US maggots that need taking out.
Russia tried to help us with Boston... if Snowden asks to release stuff about it -ESPECIALLY in light of Al-Aharbi being invited to the 4th of July in the WH - Putin may accede. He hates jihadis, too, and he suffered the most heartbreaking case of jihad.
Your emotions lead to knee-jerk conclusions.
Something I expect from the totalitarian left.
AHEM:
Congressman Sensenbrenner:
As the author of the Patriot Act, I am extremely troubled by the FBIs interpretation of this legislation. While I believe the Patriot Act appropriately balanced national security concerns and civil rights, I have always worried about potential abuses. The Bureaus broad application for phone records was made under the so-called business records provision of the Act. I do not believe the broadly drafted FISA order is consistent with the requirements of the Patriot Act. Seizing phone records of millions of innocent people is excessive and un-American.
It’s the one place on earth so vast he really could stay hiding in.
“A huge GAIN for hostile nations while at the same time fomenting sympathy by Americans for Snowden. “
What particular advantage does he gain by revealing himself? Wouldn’t it have been more advantageous for him to quietly operate under the radar rather than turn himself into the man without a country? Why would Americans having sympathy for him be a motive unless he was hoping to return?
I have had to laugh at commentators on the cable news stations. I’ve heard some of the women, one just two days ago, laugh and say...I guess he’s sleeping on the floor in the airport.
Geez...if they did their homework, they would have found out the very first day that he’s at an airport hotel.
Folks need to remember that Snowden embarked upon his contract with the intention of disclosing secrets and that his major initial heartache was that Obama broke his promise to close Gitmo.
Also, remember, Snowden didn’t go to a member of Congress (such as Rand Paul) of the media to reveal this. He went to China. Then Russia. Now Venezuela.
And he has threatened to reveal other secrets as well.
Finally, he is the first US person with a security clearance to publicly state that Stuxnet was a joint US/Israeli operation. What possible “patriotic” motivation could he have had for that revelation???
He cannot get a fair trial here in a secret court. He is forced to accept help from wherever possible now. The countries that are offering help are countries that are willing to thumb their noses at the USA imperialistic government.
"And he has threatened to reveal other secrets as well."
I hope he reveals every unConstitutional secret that exists.
RT/HRW?
Good option.
Venezuela is a rat hole.
If Snowden blew Benghazi, Boston and F&F sky-high, I bet he’d start to get a little better treatment around here. I hope Putin lets him.
Although I doubt we’ll be hearing any more out of him if Russia takes him.
That’s the thing.
Everyone, including Putin, and many others know it’s not Snowden anymore.
Before Snowden revealed himself and the info about the Prism program.. he gave lots of information to people around the globe and told them to hold it in case something happens to him.
The Guardian says they could publish up to 12 more stories just as big as the Prism program.
Anything happens to Snowden and who knows what could be released.
Not just stuff about the US. Remember.. his job was to spy on everyone. Russia included.
Like living in a 3rd world sewer, no pc intended.
I cannot go to Venezuela until they have T.P. for my bunghole.
I’d expect Putin by now would have insisted and witnessed Snowden retracting his distributed files in exchange for luxurious instead of penitential asylum, with maybe a few exceptions.
Putin’s oddly hegemonous with the American people: he considerately balkanized us into 5 states, wears our cowboy hats and boots. He knows zero could have stopped Boston. He knows zero planned or approved Benghazi.
I can only hope he helps us with the info we need via Snowden.
Not really. The Israelis themselves released that info after they got upset at Obama for leaking that the US was responsible.
Russia Today and Human Rights Watch.
“I’ve said for weeks that Snowden may have been working for the Russians since he was a CIA tech security specialist in Switzerland six years ago.”
Snowden spouts rationalizations that could have been used by foreign agents to recruit him to work against the US.
I have to wonder whether foreign agent moles in the subcontracted security vetting corporation and/or the contract firm that hired him may have made sure he got placed where he could do the most damage.
Post nasal drip = cocaine usage?
Geez!
