Russian president Vladimir Putin has passed a draconian law that calls for the arrest of anyone who is openly gay or supportive of gay rights.

In a throwback to the country’s authoritarian ruling, Russian president Vladimir Putin has signed a controversial law that punishes people for “homosexual propaganda.” The law fines people—including tourists—up to 200,000 rubles ($6,240 CDN) for “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations.”

I understand where you’re coming from. Homosexuality is an identity instead of a series of acts? Since homosexuals do sodomy, this law is certainly directed against them. And homosexuality is a horrid sex addiction — a series of nauseating acts not an identity!
I wonder if Fodor’s will update their Russian Travel Guide to include a section on dressing and acting like a heterosexual?

I don’t know if Putin is truly a cultural conservative or not - but one thing he definitely realizes, and it comes from his Communist background and KGB training - the “Gay Rights” movement is an organized political group, with clear political aims. Putin is treating them as such.
He understands its style well - the cry for “better treatment for oppressed minorities” while working their political organization into the the halls of government was used everywhere by the Soviets. This time it is the West who will use this tactic against him and his country.
Putin is reflecting the values of the people. It is indeed interesting to think that Russia is now morally superior to America, but there you go. The Russians are slowly shaking off the shackles of communism while Americans have elected (and re-elected!) an African communist as it's leader. ..And down the toilet we swirl.

According to this, Russia’s abortion rate has declined steeply form the unreal numbers in the early 90’s, which supports your idea. It could be that they are just using better birth control now, I suppose.

According to this, there was a peak of something like 280 abortions per 100 live births in the early 90’s.
