Chilean President Sebastián Pinera said an 11-year-old girl who is having a baby conceived by rape has shown 'depth and maturity'.
Chile's president has praised an 11-year-old girl after she said in a TV interview that she wants to give birth to the baby who was conceived when she was raped by her mother's partner.
"I've asked the health minister to personally look after the [girl's] health," Pinera said. "She's 14 weeks pregnant and yesterday she surprised us all with words showing depth and maturity, when she said that despite the pain caused by the man who raped her, she wanted to have and take care of her baby."
The girl was repeatedly raped over the course of two years by her mother's partner, who has been arrested and has confessed to the abuse.
"It will be like having a doll in my arms," the girl, whose face was obscured during the interview, told local TV station Canal 13. "I'm going to love the baby very much, even though it comes from that man who hurt me."
The former president Michelle Bachelet, the frontrunner in the 17 November presidential elections, favours legalising abortion in cases of rape or risk to the health of the pregnant woman or the child. "She's a girl who needs to be protected and therefore I think a therapeutic abortion, in this case because of rape, would be in order," Bachelet told Radio ADN.
"At that age the girl doesn't have a capacity of discernment; not even at age 14 would she have the mental and emotional capacity to discern this," said Giorgio Agostini, a forensic psychologist with experience in child sex abuse cases.
"So what the president is saying.... It's a subjective view that is not based on any scientific reasoning to support it."

I hope Pope Francis goes over there and gives this good, wise and loving girl and her baby a special blessing.
Chile has become quite a decent country by all accounts.
It’s typical that the pro-abortion representative quoted doesn’t believe this girl has the maturity to decide to deliver her baby, but does believe she has the maturity to decide to kill it.
(What a surprise that the culprit is her mother’s “partner” ... not.)
Some of the lefto-politicoes want to abort the baby this girl already says she loves. One doesn’t expect them to be pro-life, but whatever happened to pro-choice?
Sebastián Pinera would never be elected President (much less senator of Missouri) for that statement alone.
That's very likely true ... and a damning indictment of what's left of these United States.
Article is from the “Guardian” in UK ... those benighted folks use “partner” even in reference to lawfully wedded spouses.
This is true, but reading the article, quite frankly, I don't think she has the maturity to decide either way. She says that "[i]t will be like having a doll in my arms" - she doesn't seem to really comprehend the reality of what is going on (as expected from an 11-year old).
She’s mature enough to realize that killing the baby would be evil. No matter what happens to her the rest of her life, she will be able to look back and say, I did the right thing.
Flying squirrel......after living here for 8 years finally saw one this early around 1 am. It wasn’t flying but it was eating out of the tree feeder we have. It was so cool!
It had those huge eyes and you could see the skin they use for wings. I have to thank my dog of being able to see it.
He wanted out and instead of going to the front of the house he went towards the back porch sniffing in the air. When I shined my flashlight on the dog I could also see the flying squirrel on the tree.
Later you all!
She has certainly made the right decision. And if it turns out that she can’t manage to care for the baby, hopefully those who are watching out for her will find a good family to adopt it.
Well this is embarrassing. I meant to post that last post in the undead area, not here. Sorry. Haven’t had my morning coffee. Please forgive!
But not mature enough to understand that carrying the baby is a significant risk to her own life.
No matter what happens to her the rest of her life, she will be able to look back and say, I did the right thing.
True. I wish this girl a long, happy and healthy life. But, note that it's not like this girl "did the right thing" entirely freely. Not only was the girl repeatedly raped by her mother's "partner," but her mother supported the rapist and said the "relationship" (read: repeated child rape) was consensual. And, in any event, Chilean law prohibits abortion in all cases, even where necessary to save the mother's life.
A very common abuse scenario.
The little girl apparently needs all the protection she can get. On the one hand, the mother who --- according to other sources -- defended the boyfriend by saying the sex with her daughter (starting at age 9) was "consensual"; on the other hand, the "caring professionals" who want to dig into her and drag the baby out dead .
The little girl is like a brave flower gracing a toxic pit. God protect these children!
Please forgive me I posted a post on this thread by mistake thinking I was on another thread. Must read the thread title from now on.
BTW, The girl's mother is unfit: she knew about and facilitated the abuse for 2 years.
S’Awright.
There's no predictability concerning who will or will not be good parents. If she is getting the nurturing and support she needs (obviously away from the terror chamber she must've been living in), her whole life she can hold her head up high. That's a whole lot more "maturity" than the people in charge of her well-being can ever claim.
Situations like this cut down on this kind of rape and abuse. The availability of birth control for all, morning after pills, and abortion on demand just make it worse.
Wasn't there a time not all that long ago where people would take matters in their own hands as far as punishing a rapist such as this?
You'll notice I used the word "physiologically" twice. I'm talking about her bodily capacity and also her safety. Certainly at 14+ weeks, a normal childbirth would be far safer than the ripoff of an abortion.
Emotionally, socially, intellectually: well, she's a child. My hope is that both she and the baby --- both of them --- can be adopted by a stable, mature, caring family. Her natural mother, unfortunately, was not much better than a procuress.
