House Republicans are meeting Wednesday to hash out their own strategy on immigration, but already one major difference has emerged between them and their Senate counterparts they are far less enthusiastic about an eventual path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
Even many of the 32 Senate Republicans who voted against their immigration bill last month said they think a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants is necessary, and eventually likely. But in the House, that's far from a majority stance.
"I believe any talk about a pathway to citizenship will only make the problem worse because our borders are open and you're encouraging people to come here illegally," said Rep. Lou Barletta, a Pennsylvania Republican who pioneered immigration crackdowns as a mayor before winning election to Congress.
He said the chief goal for Republicans when they huddle Wednesday afternoon to talk strategy should be to establish that immigration enforcement must come before anything else.
For Democrats, the path to citizenship is non-negotiable as a part of the bill.
"Without a path to citizenship, there is not going to be a bill," Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said as he emerged from a meeting with House Democrats.

Speaker Boehner is playing games with his link. Try as I have, I can't live link his e-mail form like I did last week. Here it is for you all to cut and paste into your browsers:

We've got a SLIGHT opening here to save the USA. One of our goals after Rubio and his gang of phonies traitored us was to put things off until July 4 weekend, then the HOR reps go home and listen to their voters. They're ALL vulnerable.
What has to GO is the concession they've confused 'pubs with that "there has to be a pathway to citizenship". The only pathway to citizenship is to practice it in their homelands. In the US, they're invaders stealing government services and our jobs. They should leave on their own or US citizens should get rewards for turning them in, alive and healthy.
“Yes, but it will be billed as a courageous & principled stand that secures the border (after everyone in Mexico that wants to come in, has come in).”
The illegals aren’t just illiterate Mexican peasants. Consider the Chinese being hidden in containers going to western US ports as well as coming into Mexico and then across the border. The African and south Asian Muslims being given preferences in this new bill for legal immigration. Witness the Somali human rights refuges being planted in mass in small communities. Also the illegals from Asia and Africa going to Mexico and then across the border.
The elites are intent on eliminating the melting pot, that created a unique American culture, and replacing it with permanent ethnic tribal factions they can buy off with government money and play against each other. The new immigration bill has nothing to do with the “melting pot” of years past.
We must make John Boehner a friend, once obama is forced to step down or is removed or the office of President becomes vacant and the truth about joe biden’s two brain surgeries and his unfitness to be president come forward, John becomes president, we cannot alienate him. We must instead through phone calls, letters, and emails encourage him to do what is right for the country.
If they do, as Dandy Don used to sing;
"Turn out the lights, the PARTYS over."
Yep.
I am for a pathway to citizenship. It’s called legal immigration, and the law that defines it has existed for some time now.
Use it.
I am not interested in one damn thing else.
As far as what to do with the ones already here. Government let them in, they can send them out, I don’t care if its hard or harsh at all.
Do your job next time, because is the fault of the us government, not mine, and I do not feel guilty or compassionate or anything other than utterly pissed off.
LOL. A well deserved moniker.
But he's already started equivocating, albeit subtly. With him and the other sell outs, a little equivocating morphs into complete capitulation. Always has.
Does Comrade Schumer have a reason for making such a statement? The problem with illegal immigration is that our borders are not secure, foreigners just keep coming in. That is the problem that was exemplified in 1986; the "pathway to citizenship" encouraged millions more to jump the line and enter this country illegally. That was an easy feat with no borders and the promise of more freebies.
Common sense would say to enforce our border security, tighten up the enforcement of visas, and location of foreign visitors, and then, when our borders are secure, clear a path to citizenship for the foreigners who are already in our country.
Guess what, we need no new legislation to secure our borders, we just have to enforce the laws already on the books. We have to provide the resources needed to secure the borders. It is that simple, Senator Schumer! Time to set aside any new legislation, and, instead, work on adequate funding and manpower to enforce the laws we already have. Maybe someone on your staff knows where to find and read those laws.
Astute analysis. I had not thought it through that thoroughly.
Here’s the path to citizenship for the illegal criminals —
1. Pass law that takes effect in a year — 20 year mandatory sentence for anyone residing illegally in country — result? — voluntary deportation of the criminals themselves at their own expense.
2. Former criminals can apply for legal immigration
3. Eventual citizenship obtained
Redcloak is exactly correct.
I have no trust in the entire Republican House and the Senate is a total control of communists Democrats. Trust Boehner, Cantor and Ryan, I wish I could. King Obama should have been impeached by now.
Boehnor, Cantor, Ryan? We all know the answer to the trust question with these 3.
Time and time again!
Why give him another law that he can selectively enforce?
Enforce current immigration law, then we can talk about "reform."
IMO, the time has come to go third-party. At least in some specific races where we can target our resources against vulnerable RINO’s.
Make guys like Karl Rove and Lindsay Graham start ordering their Maalox in 55 gallon drums.
