Now that Rick Perry has taken himself out of the 2014 gubernatorial race, Texas on the Potomac is looking at the two early contenders for the Republican nomination for governor, Attorney General Greg Abbott and former Texas GOP chairman Tom Pauken. This profile of Pauken was written by Ross Ramsey of the Texas Tribune
Tom Pauken has chosen a hard road.
Hes a Republican running for governor in a race that could feature either the longest-serving governor in state history, one of the best-financed potential replacements in history, or both.
He says that Gov. Rick Perry and Greg Abbott, the states attorney general, are exemplars of a leadership style thats more about the politicians than the policies, and he wants to change all of that.
First, he will have to get peoples attention.
Pauken, who got his political start in the Reagan administration, is a former Army intelligence officer and Vietnam veteran, and a former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. He ran for Congress and lost twice to Jim Mattox. Years later, he ran for attorney general and finished third in a race eventually won by John Cornyn, now a U.S. senator.
Perry appointed him to a spot on the Texas Workforce Commission, and Pauken used that, in part, as a forum for his argument that the states public schools arent getting youths ready for careers.

Check this link and you will see lovely photos of Karl Rove and Greg Abbott together in a political partnership: http://www.calactx.com/events/552
I don't know or care what Rove said or says. My husband was the Republican County Chair and I was the secretary plus election law instructor at the time Pauken was State Chair. The party was shrinking due to him and we got him out and started growing again. When he starts “campaigning” then I'll write what he is really saying. It will be like “hope and change” - you don't know what that change is unless you figure it out.
He is the one saying he is a Reagan Republican and that is bovine scat but might get him some votes - say anything to get the votes.
I see the Dem’s are already floating Annise Parker, Julian Castro, and Wendy Davis as possible Candidates against the Republicans.
Well if Rove is My. Saboteur of GOPers I would be very concerned about who he is endorsing. The Republican Party was shrinking when he was the state chairman. Can you post some figures on that one? If I’m not mistaken, you might be reading the Democrat Party numbers during his tenure.
You should represent that gathering truthfully. It was a fund raiser for "Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse of Central Texas". Naturally, Attorney General Abbott would be there and the group had Karl Rove for a speaker. They were at the same place but that doesn't mean they went home together. Your representation is wrong and misleading to the max.
You just said you don’t care what Karl Rove thinks. I wouldn’t call it misleading if I say they were lovely photos of Karl Rove and Greg Abbott together. When you think about it, they captured such wonderful smiles and they looked so friendly together. How can you not call them lovely?
Marcella,
Thank you for sharing your opinions/insights about Pauken.
You’ve been around FR about as long as me, and I value your knowledge on this.
No offense to Mr Pauken, but I think he's kind of old to be Governor. So why should I vote for an old man as Governor? ?
With age comes wisdom
Pauken is a movement conservative. It is the reason he has not won high office, because in Texas those generally are given to men who are basically Tory Democrats. Cruz is the exception that proves the rule.
As a voting, conservative Texan, illegal immigration is perhaps the single most important state issue to me. My choice for Governor will be determined by the candidates' records and current stances on that subject.
Thanks for that intel, Marcella. I don't know this guy, and will need to study up on who he really is.
Perhaps it’s time for Texans to make another exception to that rule.
I just noticed TexGrill, who posted this thread, just joined in May, 2013, and he had the pictures of Abbott and Rove at the same meeting right at his fingertips to post. That says to me he is likely a Pauken plant.
His gig seems to be to bring up the name of Rove and try to attach Rove to Abbott to hurt Abbott. Abbott is a bull dog for Texas and I don't care if Rove is for him or not. Abbott is his own man and has taken on AG Eric Holder every time he has tried to hurt Texas. If you remember, Abbott told Holder he would arrest any federal officer who crossed the Texas border to take guns from Texans.
Abbott is a giant in a wheelchair. In my opinion, Pauken is not worthy to push that wheelchair.
Marcella, That's why I said to you, "you've been around about as long as me." I didn't want to say "noob".
That says to me he is likely a Pauken plant.
Lol, Oh, now, you're a conspiracy theorist just like that Gregg Abbott.
No, I think the fact he had that link to those pictures at his fingertips, is evidence of his reason for being here to promote Pauken and evidence he will try to bomb Abbott by using super glue to stick Rove to him.
If I'm wrong, we'll know it (but I am seldom wrong about politics, especially Texas politics). :o)
Well, like you, I could care less about what Karl Rove thinks about a particular candidate. In fact, I value your opinion more than Karl's..
Actually, it was a simple Google search to find the Rove and Abbott photo. I found the picture 3 minutes before posting a comment. In regards to registering in May 2013, I was just plain stupid. I had been reading Free Republic for over 3 years every day. It didn’t even dawn on me until May that I could register and make comments too. I found the site when a person in China wanted to know what’s the best conservative Website? I didn’t care much for the Alex Jones Website so we spent the entire day looking for a website that seemed to capture the conservative spirit.
