About a year ago, Wael Elfeqy waited in a long line to cast his ballot for Egypt's first democratically elected president. His candidate, Mohammed Morsi, won the election but was removed from office and jailed last week when the military seized power.
"We were so proud," said Elfeqy, a physical therapist from southwest suburban Justice who travels frequently to Egypt, where he was born. "We were so proud of our democracy, and these guys stole it from us."
While thousands rallied in the streets of Egypt both for and against Morsi's ouster, Elfeqy was among hundreds of pro-Morsi demonstrators who protested Sunday on the Magnificent Mile, outside Chicago's Egyptian Consulate. The protesters lined the sidewalks, many waving U.S. and Egyptian flags and holding homemade signs denouncing Egypt's military and interim leadership.
Egyptian military officials say the country's acting leadership is preparing for a new round of elections, but many of those gathered Sunday in Chicago fear a return to an autocratic government like the one protesters toppled in 2011.
Like Elfeqy, many of the Chicago demonstrators were born in Egypt. Others had roots elsewhere in the Arab world but said they grieved for their Egyptian friends and worried that the instability would resound far from the tense streets of Cairo.
"I'm very, very afraid that the violence started in Egypt will affect everyone," said Alex Alomary, a Jordanian software engineer living in northwest suburban Harwood Heights.
Fisal Hammouda, who left Egypt in the 1960s and now lives in Lisle, helped organize Sunday's rally and led chants of "Only president is Morsi." Hammouda said the U.S. government risks losing credibility if it fails to condemn the military takeover and push for Morsi's return to office.

Gee whiz, pal, you live in Illinois. You'd think you'd be used to that by now.
Really...
"While thousands rallied in the streets of Egypt both for and against Morsi's ouster..."
While millions rallied in the streets of Egypt for and a few dozens against Morsi's ouster...
The media...
Deport every one of the SOBs. That’s where the next terror attack will come from.
DEPORT THE GUY! The last thing we need in the US are “Muslim Brotherhood” Supporters. How did he get a visa to the US?
I thought this was going to be a picture of a bunch of Chicago teacher’s union members.
gee when they stole our democracy they partied in Chicago.
Exactly. I swear, the media needs an intervention to try to wean them from the Obama drug.
Hundreds? Must really be intimidating to the millions. God, these Obamedia must be getting desperate.
It was a REVOLUTION, not a coup!
Well, you see it’s like this - It’s my opinion, Hussein, the President of the United States, lived in Chicago so I’m sure he has been helping his Muslim Brotherhood friends come from the middle east to get ready to run the United States when Hussein finishes installing his Muslim Brotherhood here. He needs those supporters for the Brotherhood to help him. Just like he has placed a bunch of Muslims in high places already in our government.
Visa’s don’t matter and our laws don’t matter unless it is a Christian wanting a Visa or a Christian violating a littering law - then the full force of the Holder’s Justice Department will come down on that Christian.
Say after me, “Christians are bad, Muslims are good.” /s/s/s
We were so proud of our democracy, and these guys stole it from us.
Fine. Go home and fix itand kindly stay there!
Maybe they can rape some women in Obama’s front yard.
In Egypt they celebrated the MILITARY COUP like it was the 4th of July. Have you ever seen people more excited for a military coup? It looked like the end of “Return of the Jedi”. The scum on CNN could barely contain their horror.
And in Chicago we have the Muslim brotherhood come out and protest. Too bad it wasn’t the same day as the gay parade, THAT would have been fun. :D
Democracy doesn’t work when the Nazis win the election. The whole outfit needs to be banned.
In 2017 you can bet Obummer and Morsi will become neighbors. They’ll be community organizing for the Muslim Brotherhood.
“Democracy doesnt work when the Nazis win the election. The whole outfit needs to be banned.”
Are you talking about the Obama Administration?
The Islamic terrorist front group CAIR has a chapter in Chicago to get out a crowd when they want one:
I can’t repeat often enough that Morsi who was a former USA resident is an Islamist through and through. This man has had two sons born on USA soil. To some in the USA this is all that is needed to be eligible for POTUSA. To those I say take a deep look why the Founders were specific in specifying eligibility being tied to a ‘natural born citizen’ not just plain citizen. The Founders were well aware of the problems of false loyalties and possible loss of real loyalties. For me to even think of one of Morsi’s sons being able to run for POTUSA with all the closet radicals and many not in the closet Muslims voting any way possible is a nightmare, but I would bet that Obama and his enablers such as Jarrett and Soros would welcome the opportunity. I have my worries about that guy in Minnesota who was probably a ‘natural born citizen’ now being a converted Islamist/Muslim. Swearing allegiance to the USA Constitution will be done in accordance to Sharia Law.
